Keeping Number, same network?

Hi, can anybody help me with this query please?
I'm currently on a contract with 3 and am out of my tie in period. I want to sign up to a new contract through Tesco which would again be with 3.
As I want to keep the same number do I have to request a PAC code from 3 and then tell them what it is once my new phone arrives?
or can they just change my old number onto my new sim if I give them a ring?

Generally the only way to keep your number with the same network is by doing an upgrade either through the networks themselves or someone like carphone warehouse.
If you are having a specific deal through Tesco, which is available to new customers only, a way around keeping your number is:
1. Contact 3 and ask them for a PAC code (they will give over the phone).
2. Get a Virgin pay as you go simcard and port the number over (Virgin do not have a minimum amount of time that you have to keep the number on their network).
3. Once the number is over, contact Virgin for a PAC code and port back across.
It is a bit of a long winded way, but should take about 3 weeks, but you will never be without your number.0
