Nationwide Flex debit card, can you get cashback in Florida supermarkets?

Hi, new to these forums but have used some of the very useful info in past (MAEF's etc).

Just opened a Natiowide Flex account and have received cheque book and debit card. I have only opened this account to enable me to get cash whilst on holiday in Europe and the US as I feel travellers cheques are getting a bit 'old hat'.

I use my Capital One cashback credit card for all purchases in the UK, but if I need cash I use a debit card as I hate using the 'whole in the wall' ATM's. Will I be able to use this Flex debit card in the supermarket in Florida as I do here?

If not can anyone advise which is the best bank to use as I understand that some foreign banks do charge for using their ATM.

Thanks

You will not be able to get cashback from supermarkets but you will be able to withdraw funds from ATMs with no charges. This is the major benefit of being with Nationwide.
  • most american atms charge you for using them though apart from some banks maybe? not sure though, only something like a dollar though. Yeah and theres no cashback im not even sure they do that there.

No, most US ATMs don't charge you. None of the big national banks (AFAIK) do. But a lot of the small local banks will do.

But you always get a warning on screen beforehand, I seem to remember it being $3 but it may vary from bank to bank; I only paid once as I used the national banks' ATMs as much as I could.

Just remember to take the local currency option, the machine will give you the option of taking local, or a quoted rate for them to change it.

You will always get better taking it in local currency.;)

If you don't want to use ATMs why not take some of your funds in travellers cheques ($ denominations). You use them like cash and get given change on them in shops and resturants. Only downside is you'd need to have your passport with you whenever you cash them although depending on your hotel they may cash them for you too.

OP doesn't want to use Travellers Cheques..!!!

Nationwide Debit Card is far better value on exchange rates anyway.

Nor does he want to pay charges (which he would do with travellers cheques).

Thanks to all who have replied, BTW I am female, not male!

I have used travellers cheques for the last 18 years in the US, and I never carried passport, supermarkets like Publix would take a photo driving licence as proof of ID.

Biggles, can you name some of the national banks, I can then do a search of the local ATM's to where I am staying. I only intend to visit the ATM 2 or 3 times during my visit and on each occaision I will take out the maximum allowed per day.

Jeez, a general knowledge test ;-)

Off the top of my head, I do remember Wells Fargo being free.

My usual MO was to head for the bigger bank's ATM; if the first one I came across mentioned a charge, I aborted the transaction and moved on.

But, to be honest, that was pretty rare, as the main banks are also the ones with most of the ATMs. It really wasn't a problem. The only time I paid a fee I really need some cash quick and decided to bite the bullet.

A far bigger problem, I found, was that some of the ATMs were pretty antiquated and couldn't read our chip n pin cards.
