Oooh Scrooge you could open a mind field here! So many with so many opinions.
I reckon you could go on Autotgrader to start with - put in 4 k - and you'll find loads of different vehicles come up. For 4k - you would have plenty of choice. I reckon it will be up to you and your preference. I don't know if things like 'colour' , 'shape' etc matter (I'm female so it does to me!). Re insurance, state the obvious - smaller engine etc. - cheaper insurance - you can do checks on confused.com and the like.
Personally, I would avoid french and italian. German and Japanese good. How about a VW? Parts always seem reasonably priced? I drive a Ford which I am happy with - but am impartial - to a degree...Genie

Keeping the Golf would be the cheapest option tbh.0

Or for better value for money in the car a Skoda. They're pretty much glorified VW's with a badge many people pass up.
How many miles do you do? If you're a high mileage person could be worth getting a diesel.0 -

Not if its starting to run up some bills... better to trade it in? Could do with some more info from the Op ideally.Genie

It would be an unusually large bill to beat the depreciation on a newer car.....0

I saw a Volvo S40 Bi-Fuel (the factory built LPG/Petrol version) a 51 reg for less than £4000 on autotrader with 51K miles on the clock. That would give comfort and economy. Maybe try some of the factory fitted dual fuel cars, Volvo and Vauxhall are two manufaturers that are worth looking at.0

Er no....
Missing the point I think - OP wants a new/newer car..
But obviously old Golf is costing them, and want to spend 4k - so lets do some research and/or suggest a vehicle that would suit them?Genie

Renault Clio 1.5dci 80, it is of course a diesel and will give 60-75mpg. Plenty about, reasonable range of spec, if its big enough of course. We bought it against the Yaris, just seemed better value at the time.;)
PS that little Yaris on Autotrader looks excellant tho'I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
Fiat Panda? They are cheap to buy, very cheap to run and you should be able to pick up one a year or two old for that budget. Oh and they have the added bonus of soon being congestion charge free.0
