Thanks all, I will give the tax office a ring tommorrow.

You are on emergency code - previous answer which states there is no E code is not correct.
You need to act urgently to get onto a proper code before the end of the tax year -
Why do you say this?
People were confusing me with the 522L being an emergency code, but when I wrote to HMRC with all my details, the official code that I got back was again 522L.

There is an allowance which all people get, this year it is £5225 for under 65s. From this comes the code 522L. If you have any benefits then they will alter this code and if you owe anything from a previous year then that will alter the code, but most people will have a code of 522L. This code is not an emergency code.
When someone starts work and a cannot provide a tax code then an emergency code is used. The code is the current under 65 allowance that is 522L for this year, and will be applied either as a week1/month1 code or as a cumulative code depending on their circumstances.
So you can be on 522L as a result of being on an emergency code or as a result of it being issued by the tax office, only by knowing the circumstances can you know if it is an emergency code, the code itself will not tell you.0 -
Sorry but these figures are not making a lot of sense. If you were on a week 1 basis tax would be about £12.50. NI would be about 8.96 whether you were on week 1 or not.hi,
This wage was for one week.
code basis?? IND W1, Period 46/2007 ... table letter A.
The numbers are broken down and it says 181.50 under amount, then tax 10.69 and N.I 7.99.
Gross is 1321.03, tax to date is 1306,92, 0.00 pension, tax to date 27.39, EE's N.I to date 27.25.
Jen
You give two completely different tax to date figures above 1306.92 and 27.39.
Is anything being deducted from your wages before tax and NI eg an overpayment of wages in the past?
Can you advise your weekly pay tax and NI figures since you started?
You say pension 0.00 can you confirm that you are not in a pension scheme?0 -

Emergency tax code
The emergency tax code is 522L
A BR code is used if you fail to sign a P46 and an emergency code cannot be given.
From HMRC web site about taking on new employees
http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/taking_on.htm#7d1
Which tax code to use On the form P46Tax code to use Box A ticked *Emergency code on a cumulative basis Box B ticked *Emergency code on week 1/month 1 basis Box C ticked BR code on a cumulative basis No box tickedBR code on a cumulative basis Form not signed BR code on a cumulative basis0 -
Another thought;i was on emergency tax and the code was BR not 522L
522L is what i am on now and is the correct code
I am also due a rebate since September that i can have now or wait till April.
I have never heard of anyone having a choice about when their rebate ges through.
If you are on a 522L cumulative code any rebate due would have gone through, if this is not the case you are proberbly on 522L week 1 an emergency code.0 -
i can only go by what i have been told
so obviously i was lied to by a person working for HMRC
I can claim my tax back when i want, the guy told me that in December ( obviously another lie ) He asked me if i wanted it now or in April.
I am monthly paid so i said dont worry till April, its only a few hundred pounds and i can wait for that
my dad was on 522L till he retired back last year so obviously another lie by the tax officeIf You See Someone Without A Smile......Give Them One Of Yours0 -

I cannot comment on your tax position without knowing full details of your tax code tax basis total gross to date and total tax to date, other than to say that if there is any tax due back and it has not been paid then you must be on a month 1 code. If you were on a cumulative code any tax due back would be automatic.
As far as your Dad's code is concerned, 522L would have been his correct code. As explained earlier 522L is the code most under 65s will have. It is a normal code but it is also used as the emergency code. In order to know which it is being used as you need to know the individual circumstances.0
