hi,
How can I tell whether I am on the right tax code?
I started work through an agency in November and on top of my wage slip it says Tax Code: 522L is this correct?
However, the wage slip I have just received has me taxed at nearly £20 on a wage of around £181.
Thanks
Jen

522L is probably right unless you have another job, pension, benefits in kind or owe tax!
Is the wage for a week or a month?:heartpuls baby no3 due 16th November :heartpulsTEAM YELLOWDFD 16/6/10"Shut your gob! Or I'll come round your houses and stamp on all your toys" The ONE, the ONLY, the LEGENDARY Gene Hunt :heart2:0 -

Is this code being applied on a cumulative basis or week 1 basis. The code basis should be on your payslip somewhere usualy next to the tax code.
Do you mean that you have paid £20 tax on a gross of £181, as this does not fit with a code of 522L. If this is the case can you advise the exact figures and also the gross to date and tax to date on your payslip and also the last payslip before that, this should show the reason for it.0 -
522L is most peoples tax code. Theres no such thing as emergency tax really. As previous poster said, it makes a difference if yor being taxed on a week 1 basis though.
Again £20 on £181 is not right.
Did you supply a p45 or sign a P46?0 -

hi,
This wage was for one week.
code basis?? IND W1, Period 46/2007 ... table letter A.
The numbers are broken down and it says 181.50 under amount, then tax 10.69 and N.I 7.99.
Gross is 1321.03, tax to date is 1306,92, 0.00 pension, tax to date 27.39, EE's N.I to date 27.25.

522L is the standard code to allow for the basic personal allowance. So unless you have special circumstances, it is correct.
On £181 for a week, I think I would expect to pay about £18 tax and also NI - but I don't have tax tables with me.0 -

£181 would equate to approx £12.00 in tax if they are applying your personal allowance, 10% band and 22% band correctly. I've probably made an error in fag packet calculation, so you will be paying the right amount of tax.
So, £20 inc NI seems approx correct.
You WILL be entitled to a tax rebate at the end of the year however. If you weren't working from April until you started this job, your rebate will be approx £50-£100, assuming your wage is fairly constant, but that depends on what benefits you were claiming when you were unemployed.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
You are on emergency code - previous answer which states there is no E code is not correct.
You need to act urgently to get onto a proper code before the end of the tax year - dont wait until after the end of the year or you will be in a queue with 100's of others waiting for a refund.
You need to ring your tax office (your employer will give you the number) and ask them what info they need to put you on a cumulative code. If you were not working or claiming JSA, it should be straightforward. Once this info is passed to your employer, they will operate 522L on a cumulative basis and refund the tax paid.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0 -

Good answer, although if the OP has a Notice of Coding, she will already have the contact number for her tax office.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0
