My sister has this, cream units, black worktops & a real oak floor, it looks fab.

My kitchen is oak & when I saw her cream doors I was sorry I used oak!

Hers is so light & bright.

    Thanks Mrs E!
This is exactly what I want to achieve - light and bright, so your comments are very reassuring. I love the oak too though - that is my current second choice.
Does your sister find the oak floor easy to clean and look after?

I agree with Emmalou, if you're going to rent out your flat I would go for a dark mottled laminate worktop. There are some nice slate and granite effect ones about, that aren't high gloss.

And vinyl on the floor is going to give you a very similar look to tile effect laminate but will be much more practical if your tenants slosh water about. If you've warmed to the idea of a wood effect floor, you can still use vinyl - some of the wood effects are really quite convincing, including Karndeans - although I suspect you could find something cheaper.
I write blogs about kitchens ... and I design kitchens for a living ... I just love kitchens!

Yes. But she has no young children & doesn't do loads of cooking.
Its probably better than my pale cream kitchen tiles:rolleyes:
  • emmalou,
your combination of cream gloss granite worktop and oak floor sounds great.. the units will look up to date but being cream look quite classic too which will go with the oak wood floor, creating a warm, cosy kitchen. it will also be stylish and the granite worktop will give it a classy touch and make the whole kitchen look real quality.
it's nice to know others out there take their time with these kind of decisions, when i mention it to others to try and get opinions they often say ' haven't you ordered it yet?' as if i should just be able to go in and decide on one visit to the showroom!
good luck with your final decision, but i think you've already made the right one :)
i've also just found out theres a shop called completely flooring near me which stocks quick step and karndean so i will go there and have a look!
  • Karndean flooring is fab!!!! You can trim it too (as in make a cheque board effect with silver strip). Ive seen this in the showrrom where my hubby works and it looks super!!!! I would definately go for black worktops with a white kitchen and dark, if not also black flooring. I am not a fan of tile (too much hassle). I prefer the matching splashbacks to the worktop and it looks stunning in the black gloss effect. My friend has had it done with a white kitchen, it wasn't expensive but really looks quite the opposite and I'm green with envy!!!
  • an update - my kitchen units come next week. i've warmed to the wood laminate, and i think i'm going to get oak effect. as an earlier poster it seems to be the right shade to go with white. although my lounge (next to kitchen) has maple effect floor, i think it looks too washed out with white.

as for a worktop i'm still undecided!!! in the homebase showroom the white gloss has a lightish blue worktop which actually looks ok. i've found some mid-grey ones which just look a bit boring. black seems to be the best overall but i'm not totally sure. the main kitchen shops seem to play it safe with laminate worktops, i think i'd like something a bit different, but i can't find it!

    Just an Idea,

    visit www.plasman.co.uk for your worktop

    and

visit www.pergo.com for ideas on laminate flooring

    both companies have great selections
  • need to sort out flooring this weekend... cant decide whether to get oak / white oak / limed ash laminate or black or other ceramic tiles. its a concrete floor with a white slab gloss kitchen and probably grey worktop.. any late suggestions ??
  • had a look this morning at homebase, i feel that the oak doesnt look modern enough, so i'm stuck between the cheap option of maple, gluing the joins, or the proper bathroom stuff in limed ash. either that or the white oak from screwfix. any advice?
  • So interesting that this debate is still going on! I'm looking to buy kitchen units at the moment and have decided for sure that I want white but am debating whether to get gloss or matt (I will be getting them from Ikea). I've heard they are hard to clean but reviews on here back that up but also contradict it and it sounds like they are worth cleaning as they will sparkle a bit when clean (rather than the dull matt ones I have at the moment). This debate was set up in 2008 so now I am even more worried that if people though they could be dated then - in 2012, 4 years on - now I'm even more worried. It feels like any kitchen will date to be honest. I'm doing my flat up to live in but possibly sell in a few years. Any recent thoughts gratefully received! Thanks
