white gloss kitchen units - which worktop and floor?

i've just ordered my white gloss units for my 2 bed maisonette. the kitchen is rectangle, 3.5 x 1.85m, with a window at one end. i want to create a clean and modern feel to the place, as its a flat rather than a house and i am planning to rent it out in a few months time.
i'm a bit stuck as to what type of flooring and worktops to choose?
i'm not really a big fan of laminate wood effect in kitchens so was thinking about tile effect laminate.
again i'm not that sold on wood effect worktops either.. i feel it doesnt go with the modern feel.
can anybody suggest to me any ideas for a combination that would match up well?

I read somewhere that it looks best if floors & worktops match.
You don't want wood, so that really only leaves you black if you want modern.
I can't see the point of tile effect laminant, tiles are far better in a kitchen so why not just get tiles, black glossy porcalien (sp?) look great, they have them in the posh loos where I work.
Coloured glass instead of tiles for the splashback is the thing now instead of tiles. They have it in B&Q, have a look at it, pricy but lovely. The black gloss would look great with black gloss worktops (or better still granite)0 -
I do think that Oak looks nice with white gloss, softens it a bit?
I really am not fan of tile effect laminate though, I'd rather have real tiles.0 -
I am doing the kitchen at the moment - Ikea Abstract gloss white units - gloss black granite tops, Duck Egg Blue Rubber floor.
The dishwasher, range cooker, hood, sinks and taps are stainless steel as are 13amp sockets and switches with a black detail.
I have no wall units (apart from the cooker hood) and have a minimalist 900mm dia clock on the wall as well as a 22" LCD TV/Monitor with wireless keyboard and mouse.0 -
hi, thanks for the suggestions. i dont fancy having to lay ceramic tiles as it would take a lot longer than laminate and would be harder to get a perfect finish, getting it level etc. also its hard and things break and also cold on the foot.
the pictures i had seen of wood floor and worktops with white units were in the wickes takeaway book and i think they are all beech. i do agree oak is a nice wood and i can picture that looking good with white.
remember i am going to let the flat out so i'm trying to avoid things that can get damaged. i doubt glossy worktops would last long before getting scratched with uncaring tenants!0 -
Hi want2bmortgage3
Well done on getting your units - guess you went for the 10% off deal in Homebase? I am being very indecisive about my units. I have been thinking of cream gloss, black granite and wood/wood effect floor for a while now. I have about 3 weeks before I am forced into a decision.
If you are planning on renting out, that is a totally different ball game. I think you have to think less of what you would really like and think instead of what would be most hard wearing - you'll regret it if you don't.
In your situation I would go with a matt laminate worktop (black or dark grey) with upstands and splashback behind the hob (stainless steel?). I think wall tiles should be avoided as they will date a kitchen.
I did see tile effect laminate in a quick-step showroom that looked very good. You could go for a slate effect to match the worktops.
Or, have you considered something like Karndean? You haven't got a huge kitchen, so maybe not too expensive.
Good luck with making your decision!0 -
We've just ordered our IKEA gloss white kitchen & their stone effect black worktop. It's a semi matt finish, light speckles in the pattern. It's also available in a silver or grey style.
The flooring is to be Aqualoc blushed oak colour from B&Q.
Big LG American fridge in black & oven hob black, too.
Wall colour behind units in red, with purple/red/mauve glass mosaic splashback - opposite wall in diner will be pink.

I had that in my last kitchen, its lovely. Its in between gloss & matt. I would have used it in here too, but the longest lenght was too short.0 -

My kitchen is oak & when I saw her cream doors I was sorry I used oak!

Didn't they offer the custom make service?
We've got one lonnnnnnng run, of 5.5m , they are doing a 4m & 1.5m, mitred, with bolts supplied & ready to join.
Plus they're making a breakfast bar 2 1/2m x 1m, with 2 rounded edges.
The wait is about 4 weeks.

Yeah, we moved in here & had the kitchen fitter in & the kitchen put in within a month. The fitter was starting on a Monday & I was running around like a mainac trying to get everything in time.0
