  • Ford would have an extremely difficult time proving anything, if original OEM parts were used, especially with an independant garage with a track record of many many years.

Dealers don't tend to offer anything more than a polished floor and glass walls, as well as a reduced bank balance. The mechanics in the back have no interest in the business beyond completing timesheets and getting paid.

I would always recommend a local independant garage over a dealership, unless the job is such that expensive special equipment is required.
  • Dont be intimidated because you are a women. Lots of the male population are not clued up either. The trouble is these days is that cars are so more advanced than what they where say 5 or 10 years ago. A little homework and time can put you on the right track. Also remember there is forums on your type of car that you can find advice on. If i remember rightly as martin says its not about giving things up its about getting in affect the best deal. Do your homework and you should be quids in.

Thanks so much for this, could you possibly direct me to the forum please? I knew I would be able to rely on MSE to help me. I merely want to get best value/service for money, and not blow my warranty.
  • Contact your local Trading Standards to see who they'd recommend. Our town has an "approved list" which is publicised to all and sundry, so people know of the 200 garages in town who they can and can't trust!
  • The thing is I am intimated but dont necesarilly take things they say as gospel, so I just dont trust this particular dealer, they have a bad reputation amongst many people I know

thank you to all, the car is 2nd hand to me and will be one year old next month, however it has done 13k miles, I am not sure what my mileage is likely to be annually.

I havent heard of long service before, so didnt know this was an option.

The possible scenarios with your car are:

It is on fixed service (10,000 or annual) and it has not been done yet - probably not as if it has gone past 10,000 it would be telling you.

It's on fixed service, but was done before you bought the car and the system reset. If so it won't need doing until a year after it was last done, or when it next tells you (depending if it had a fixed or long life service).

It is on longlife and it doesn't need doing yet - this is mileage based or every 2 years

You really do need to check the service indicator. Have you done this yet? It could save you a lot of cash.
  • this has been so informative, as I was really unaware of that there was a difference at least which ever option I choose to opt for I am at least armed with relevant information, keep it coming

    First service?

So it's new and under warranty?

I think you'll find if you have it done anywhere other than an authorised VW dealer then your warranty is null and void.

I think you'll find under eu law that as long as the service it to the VW spec and us genuine parts then any garage can service ti and the warranty is still valid. we get all our company cars and vans serviced at a local garage. and have a couple of warranty claims with no issues, just goes to the main dealers and they sort the warranty bit out.

    Regards

I am still taking everything in, and not sure what you mean by service indicator. On my old golf, it would normally indicate when the car needed a service, at least two thousand miles beforehand. Nothing has shown on this car, I noticed the main dealer sticker saying service at 10k.

Your help is gratefully received, and its great not to have patronising comments, unlike one I received earlier.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Interesting reading. My hubby is getting a brand new Fiesta next month and has been offered a 2 year service deal at £250 or a 3 year service deal for £350 through the dealer Arnold Clarke. He is debating as the 3 year deal doesn't seem OTT too much.

He's unsure and need guidance, please advise and I will pass on the comments.
