So it's new and under warranty?
I think you'll find if you have it done anywhere other than an authorised VW dealer then your warranty is null and void.
Not correct. European Commission Regulation No. 1400/2002 , also known as Block exemption put a stop to that practice years ago.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0 -
thank you to all, the car is 2nd hand to me and will be one year old next month, however it has done 13k miles, I am not sure what my mileage is likely to be annually. I am sure you can tell I am not au fait with all, but am grateful for any helpful advice received. I will check again with dealers what they are offering, both said filters, so will establish exactly what is included and if I can I will get them to put it writing, Haha, please forgive my ignorance, however previous dealings with this company have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.
I havent heard of long service before, so didnt know this was an option. And as yet I havent discovered how to use all the gadgets, including the cd player..ahem...go one say it typical woman0 -
You could consider just getting fluids and filters changed if the car is otherwise sound as most other service items are checks and visual inspections.Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

Dont be intimidated because you are a women. Lots of the male population are not clued up either. The trouble is these days is that cars are so more advanced than what they where say 5 or 10 years ago. A little homework and time can put you on the right track. Also remember there is forums on your type of car that you can find advice on. If i remember rightly as martin says its not about giving things up its about getting in affect the best deal. Do your homework and you should be quids in.If i could i would, but i cannot so i wont, but maybe one day i will.0 -
Firstly, block exemption of October 2003 says that you can go to any garage to have your car serviced whilst under warranty as long as - 1) The garage is Vat registered. 2) The vehicle is serviced according to manufacturers requirements (ie 10k or annually etc). 3) Genuine or equivalent parts are used.
First service would require minimum of oil and oil filter change plus whatever - check with your service book..... All makes vary so much it is hard to keep up!
Many dealers do what is known as a 'visual' service on the first one - ie oil and filter and a look around. We don't hold with that personally, oil and filter yes and wheels off check the brakes etc. and a bloody good look! It doesn't matter if its a first service or not. Safety first. And we still don't charge a fortune!
A first service at our place - on average, as get so many different makes in - varies from say 85 to 120, depending on vehicle and needs. An hours labour tops.Genie

Isn't it VW that guarantees to price match any written quote for servicing? Just get that guy to give you a written quote and take it to the stealers and watch them try to worm their way out of the offer.0

"Under new legislation, I believe and I maybe wrong that provided the car is serviced using genuine parts, this does not invalidate the warranty."
Correct on all counts, also, although it's not a position you want to put yourself in, even if the car hasn't had an authentic service if the problem is not one that would have been covered by a routine service it is still covered. IE a failure of an electrical component, but you don't want the argument.
From personnal experience I have found the main dealers to be only too happy to carryout waranty work regardless of SH. However I must admit these have only been minor issues or known likely failures.
Our last 2 cars, both of which we still have, were not serviced by the manufacturer. 1 was bought with 192miles on the clock, 6 months old ex dem, the other 11 months old, 27K miles with 2 Renault agent services.
As has been metioned before my issue is how do you know the job has been done correctly?, answer, you either do it yourself or find a garage you can trust and that usually isn't the main dealer. Obviousely from what the OP has said the latter isn't possible. Even if I supplied my own oil to dealer to keep the cost down and to ensure that the right quality stuff was used, how the heck do you even know they've used it. Maybe I'm too distrustfull?, I don't think so.
I chose to ignore the main dealer servicing and do everything myself, keeping details, dates and receipts etc. As I said several minor waranty issues but all fixed at the main dealer, even though niether car actually came from there.
I suppose its an attitude to risk thing, but it has in my case saved money, and I have the peace of mind of knowing it was done correctly.;)
I don't recommend this to anyone, but it is the other money saving option/gamble.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

Yeah, my bad, I didn't realise the law had changed.
Not that I'm sure it's worth the potential hassle for the sake of a few quid; if my timing belt/chain goes and takes the engine with it, Ford have nowhere to wriggle if I've had the car serviced by Ford.......if I've had it done at a third party garage, then I'm pretty sure Ford would be able to provide an expert witness who'd testify that the vehicle hadn't been serviced to their standards and then you're into the whole world of who to sue.....You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
