my dell laptop has died on me. It wont boot up at all, my sons friend who knows quite a bit about computers has taken it to have a look. Whats really upsetting me is I have all my grandsons photos on there from the day he was born, is there any way in this day and age that I can get them back even if my computer has had it???? I know I should have backed them up but I didnt. Help anyone???? By the way, as for the computer, it just went all of a sudden, no warnings just wont boot up

If the thing is dead and there are no lights then it may be the motherboard or something peripheral. The hard disk may be intact. You may be able to stick the HDD on an adapter and back the whole lot onto DVDs or USB flash drive. Don't dispare yet and DON'T LET THE FIXER OVERWRITE THE DISK.0

Take the hard drive out as above before friend formats it.0

ha ha! You'll be amazed at how many "friends who know about computers" actually make everything worse :beer:You'll always miss 100% of the shots you don't take - Wayne Gretzky
Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.0 -
Yeah, the hard drive (where all your photos are stored) will most likely still be working. So it's unlikely that you've lost your photos.
You either need to get the laptop repaired, or remove the hard drive to get the data off it - for example you could connect it into a desktop PC using a hard drive enclosure which you can buy for a couple of quid.0 -
Whatever you do, don't run a recovery cd, restore cd, or any kind of "recovery" mode on the laptop (if it is accessible).
The majority of them wipe all data in the process.0 -
If you are going to let anyone repair it, take the drive out go to a computer fair and buy a replacement one as cheap as possible for them to work on it.
But keep the original drive safe with you.
Put it into a caddy and you can access the files from another computer.
You could do that anyway and backup all the DATA then let them have the drive back for repair, think that is what I would do.
The one thing I would NOT do is let anyone try to repair it before I have backed up the data/pictures.
A device like this caddy:

Have you tried the battery trick , had a problem with my laptop not booting up caused by a build up of static on the motherboard.
Take the battery out and disconnect power , hold down the power button for 10 seconds replace battery and try to boot up.0 -
when you do get it back (hopefully with photos) sign up with humyo.com (you can upload 25gb of images) all for free. You can install software, and it appears as a drive letter..0
