  • I seem to remember a lot of boiled potatoes (yuk), also luncheon meat, shepherds pie (yum), roast, hearts (probably couldn't eat it now but they were lovely filled with stuffing), jacket potatoes with cheese for Sunday tea plus home fried fish in batter.

    Sairy-my dad still goes to Ely market every week. He goes quite early and meets his friends then does a bit of shopping in Waitrose.

    In my day the fish stall tended to mainly sell yellow or white fish, kippers and sometimes bloaters.

    I used to love the sweet stall or van that sold nougat and that multi-coloured rock.
  • I think my Mum still cooks like this , I hated it . cant remember what we had, but then i was a very fussy eater and barely ate anything lol .Sunday tea always involved cakes and other such sweet stuff ( is that why i dont have a sweet tooth? ) .

    we always had the same things, if you forgot what day it was you just checked what was in your sandwiches! mum carried on like that until she died. looking back i suppose it saved money - she only bought what she knew she was going to use and as money was very tight nothing was ever thrown away.

    she had set days for doing things as well; washing day was monday, baking day was tuesday and upstairs cleaning day was wednesday....in some ways i look back at it all with a great deal of affection

    Oh I forgot spam fritters and fish pies How could I forget that! Mince cooked in milk - YUK!

    Irish stew on saturday left to cook while you went to town for the shopping. Madeira cake & cucumbers slices in vinegar with tinned salmon for sunday tea with tinned fruit cocktail & tinned cream.

    How sad I don't remember much of what we ate. Especially since my Mum spent half her life in the kitchen. Everything was planned for and shopped for accordingly, so nothing was wasted.
    We usually had some kind of cooked breakfast. Lunch was the main meal of the day usually and we always had a pudding. Like most, Mum did all the washing on Mondays (all day job then:eek: ) so it was probably cold leftover beef or lamb made into cottage pie (Dad's favourite!) The easier it was to eat the better he liked it. The only bought cake we had was battenburg or cherry from the local bakers (a special and rare treat). Mum (she would've been 87 today bless her :A ) was a very competant cook but these two cakes beat her skills.
    I don't believe we had the same daily meals week in week out, she had more imagination than that - no disrespect meant to any posters who did.

    Had they remained at the same price I would have saved nearly £10K :eek: :eek:
    (smoking about 30 a day then) but as they've gone up in price dramatically it will be more.

    I can't believe how disgusting they smell now, when I first stopped I went round like the Bisto kids sniffing other people's smoke. I'd never tried for me before, always because of pressure (2 or 3 times) I'm so glad I did :j

    I was born in 1969, so more a child of the 70's really, but we had a set tea on each day of the week. When I was about 8 or 9 we had to keep a diary for a school project which I found a few years back and it seemed to be entirely based around food! Despite having the same meals every night for years I seemed to really enjoy the routine-ness of it. Discussing it with OH he said some family friends of theirs did something similar, but he would have hated it.
    We had:-
    Sunday, roast chicken usually (but sometimes steak with new potatoes and salad in Summer and stew and dumplings in Winter)
    Monday, leftover chicken with a fried egg and chips (hm of course)
    Tuesday, potatoes with a choice of - lamb chops and mint sauce, sausages, or hm shepherds pie
    Wednesday, chips with either bacon egg and tomatoes, or fish fingers and peas
    Thursday, potatoes with something different from Tuesday night
    Friday, sausage or bacon sandwich
    Saturday, chippy night.

    Can you see a pattern with the potatoes, chips, potatoes.....
    Although it was repetitive these are still my favourite meals, it was all hm, reasonably cheap as well, no spending hours writing meal plans and shopping lists either! My mum did not like cooking so spent as little time as she could doing it. We didnt have a freezer until I was about 10, and ready meals in those days were boil in the bags. We didnt have puddings either unless you count tinned peaches and tip top, or neapolitan ice cream with that chocolate sauce that sets hard.

    I think occasionally that I might indulge in some nostalgia and follow my mums meal plan for a couple of weeks, I think my dd's would enjoy it but OH would complain about all the chips!
