  • Hi
I was born in that glorious week in 1966. However my stepfather was quite a lot older than my Mum and during the 80's I knew what day of the week it was by what we ate!! He retired in 1979 and took over running the house as my Mum worked full time. We had 2 roasts at the weekend ( if they weren't going to a dinner dance! then I would have chicken maryland) usually chicken and then pork or lamb- don't really remeber Roast beef and I never done roast beef in 20 years of marriage! Leftovers on monday and tuesday. Wednesday was usual pork chops and thursday would be savoury mince or HM burgers. Friday was fish. I always think of Arctic roll as a 70's thing and vienetta the 80's successor.

I loved Bacon grill - my Dad did it for breakfast, sometimes. I made the mistake once of saying I liked hotdog sausages and got them every time I went to stay! Mind we always had a chinese takeaway at my Dad's on a saturday night, umm then cold for breakfast from the hostess trolley - amazing I never got food poisoning! Then cooked brunch when he got up - in mycase hotdog sausages!

Have you ever let a Vienetta melt and seen how little 'product' there actually is? Expensive way of buying air.

Saying that, Vienetta is nice though! Has to be the standard plain one however.

  • There used to be a little Mr Whippy 'factory' near my parents house - although I say factory it was more a garage with a couple of ice cream vans outside!! It used to be a treat to be able to go there and get an icecream.

Plumrose hotdogs..........yuck (although I liked them as a child!)........although the rush to the bakers on Bonfire Night to get the finger rolls before they sold out was always exciting - part of the thrill of the day!

We also ate tinned meatballs quite regularly (can't remember who made them) or those awful pies in a tin that you opened with a tin opener. The little meat in them always seemed so fatty.

There was always a tin of ham in the cupboard at Christmas - and it still seemed to be there in April!

I was born in 1970 and whilst I don't think we had a set menu each week, there was a definite repetitive-ness.

I remember it was often fish and chips on a Friday lunch when I was little - dear me, the day chips went to 20p a bag - the consternation in the household over the price!!! .........

Us kids use to go up the chip shop, on our bikes ofcourse, and get half a bag of chips for 7½p. Them were the days.

I'm a late 60's born child and we had set meals every week.

    Sunday - Roast
Monday - Cold meat, jacket potatoes and baked beans - boiled spuds in summer.
Tuesday - Cottage Pie, mash and veg
Wednesday - Chops, boiled potatoes and veg
Thursday - Sausage, mash and veg
Friday - Fish, boiled potatoes and veg
    Saturday - Stew

The only change was summer where we had salad twice a week instead.

My mother still has cold meat, jacket potatoes and beans on a Monday, a combination I cannot eat now

We had scampi every Friday - but dad was a fisherman and came home on a Friday with a bag of prawns. :D He makes the best batter!

    :)

Would you have the recipe for that batter??

Child of the 70's here subjected to the yucks of spam fritters, tripe, liver, fray bentos - eeeeeeww. We used to go up to the corner shop for a pound of frozen peas which would be wieghed into a brown paper bag and then boiled for about an hour. My Mother didn't do a lot of daily cooking, being mostly tired and emotional, but did sometimes do a curry - complete with raisins, peanuts and plates of toasted coconut and fried banana slices. I did most of the cooking but don't remember there being a pattern to it - just whatever was around really. We had free school meals and would just have sandwiches for tea - white bread and jam or marmalade. We were amazed that other children went home to a cooked tea and considered them spoilt .... and lucky
I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 2008

oh this is a lovely thread.

my mum made the best potato scollops ever (sliced potato coated in home made batter) to go along with spam or corned beef fritters all cooked in lard.

angel delight yum and dream topping lovely!

we had one bottle of pop and squash a week so when that had gone it was cups of tea or water.

nescafe in tiny tins that we had as a special treat - made with milk and lots of sugar. hot vimto after school in winter, i still love this.

going to the shop for a cornet, a small brick of ice cream in a square cornet.

because my dad worked shifts we had sunday dinner on saturday lunchtime - sunday was tinned salmon (luxury), luncheon meat, pickles etc. and tea out of bone china cups so it went cold almost straight away.

we always had crisps with our salad and made a little pile of salt to dip our spring onions into,i thought everyone did this but i think it was only us

We didn't have the same things on specific days. One thing we did have was a roast on Sunday. It was a joint when there was cash, a roast ox heart when not. If we were really strapped it was meat and potato pie.

It was my gran who cooked. On Monday we had leftover roast made into:

    Shepherds pie
    pasties
curry - served on a small bed of boiled 'pudding' rice, served with potatoes and veg!
    Rissoles in gravy
Cold meat and pickles- not my fave as I don't much like cold meat.

Other than that she made a wide variety of things - none of which were expensive. I liked tripe and onions, but I don't like tripe now.

We had a dish in the 60's which was really cheap. Belly pork - only a bit - fried and then finely sliced hard white cabbage cooked with the lid on and a little water. It was then seasoned with, I think, soya sauce and a little brown sugar. If anyone knows this dish and can give me proper instructions, I would be grateful.

In 1968 I spent £1.15shillings a week on food. Not much even then.
