My childhood memories are of the 50's and again it was a case of always the same meal on a set night of the week.
Monday - cold roast meat with chips, peas, gravy (laundry day so no time for proper cooking)
Tuesday - Liver and onions with mashed potato and maybe carrots.
Wednesday - sometimes kippers for grandad or boiled eggs for me.
Thursday - maybe tripe or pigs feet for grandad and possibly beans on toast for me.
Friday - home made cod and chips with mushy peas
Saturday - chops or sausages with mashed potatoes
Sunday - Roast dinner (usually lamb, pork or beef as chicken was very expensive then) with roast potatoes, carrots, cabbage and gravy.
Sunday tea was always some of the cold meat sliced on a plate with some pickles, celery (why?) and bread and butter. Followed by jelly, fruit salad and evap (or trifle if uncle's gf was visiting) and cake of some kind (sometimes home made eccles cakes).0 -
nearly rich - forgot about not having a fridge...........or a tele for that matter. We listened to the pirate radio stations and even followed The Archers.Mary

Hi
From my vague fuzzy memories of 60's Italy:
Sunday: roast chicken (can you believe, chicken used to be a LUXURY!!!)
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday I cannot remember
Thursday: gnocchi di patate (potato dumplings with tomato sauce)
Friday: baccala` (salted cod, fried or stewed with tomato and potatoes)
Saturday: trippa (tripe, cooked in tomato sauce and with parmesan cheese sprinkled on top YEUCHHHHHHH!!!!!).
CaterinaFinally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0 -

Hi Thirzah
If we had fish it was always on a Thursday-that was market day in Ely and there was a fish stall on the market
It is still market day in Ely but we also have one on Saturday and a Farmers Market as well. I have been today.0 -
Tripe - oh the memories that brings back! I literally could not swallow it, but my father loved it! I can still recall the smell...
We always had lots of potatoes and home grown veg and fruit. Only rice was the pudding variety - and yes, our spaghetti was the tinned variety too!
We certainly had very little spare cash, but I never remember going hungry. Don't know how my parents managed, but they did.Resolution:

I dont recall having fixed meals for fixed days of the week - maybe there was, but I didnt notice. I know there was often bought "fish and chips" of a Saturday.
What I do recall was an extremely BORING diet - very very restricted. I remember: fish fingers/baked beans/spam/roasts/Birds Eye custard with steamed puddings or fruit canned in syrup.
I've been making up for lost time ever since - you name it - I'll try it (within my self-imposed vegetarian boundaries).0 -
It was a bit 'the same' week after week...........I did vary it a little here and there I was never the worlds best cook (far from it ) nor was I very adventurous in actually trying new things if we went out, which wasnt often.
I think it all became habit forming.
Never tasted tripe.............ever !!! Saw it once and that was enough to put me off.Mary

I was a child of the sixties too. I remember some quite foul meals. Soused herrings, liver and bacon casserole and rice pudding with skin on it yeuch yeuch.
We did have pudding most nights. But never had bixcuits and cake was once a week on Sunday eveings along with pilchards on toast and Sunday night at the London Palladium. The only night we were allowed to watch tv whilst eating.
I was one of 5 skinny kids, at least till I left home. But there was no snacks or eating between meals. I don't believe I ever had a crisp till my 20's and we never had chips, unless it was fish and chips at the sea side. Oh and winkles on holiday I loved poking them out with a pin.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:
