Porting a number?

Can anyone tell me about 'porting a number'???
I have a number on the three 3 network that loads of contacts have. The contract has run out (and I'm not impressed with 3 anyway). But I like the number - it's dead easy to remember!
I've been told that I can 'port' the number to another network, but I haven't a clue what that means.
Can anyone explain this and how it works/how to do it???
Thanks in advance.
Cheers all

The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

OK first ask 3 for your PAC code. You may have to do this in writing. Once you get it sort out your new phone with the network you want. Whilst the shop just want to sell you the contract it's worthwhile telling them that you want to port your number, but you will need to do that direct with the network who will need the PAC code.
Don't forget once ported to cancel your contract with 3 - best to find out if they need notice, etc. beforehand.0 -

quidsinquentin says his contract with 3 has run out. So I think all he needs to do is to ring 3 and ask for PAC and give it to the new provider - no need to specifically cancel his contract with 3 as it will be cancelled automatically once the number is ported. So no need for separate cancelling?

Many thanks.
Does the number have to go to a new 'monthly' contract or can it go onto a PAYG sim, would you know? The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.0 -
