I like the idea of leaving excessive packaging in the shop, also then it wouldn't look like I had bought so much.

I often return home to find wheelie bin has been empited & left in the middle of my driveway entrance >:(

To reduce the amount of rubbish our household generates (and I don't understand why 7 people generate that much more rubbish):

Its possibly because besides my own family we have a lot of friends/family round alot of the time also for meals evenings in etc. and unfortunately the recycling element leaves a lot to be desired in our area. The bin doesnt get so full every week just occasionaly. But fortunately the council didnt feel the same way and are happy to provide me with an extra bin.  ;D

    It's not just me then!!!

I'm sure the bin men do it on purpose - if the car's on the drive they put the wheelie bin by the hedge so it doesnt block the drive. If I'm out then they leave it right in the middle of the drive!!!!!!! >:(

Also, we have a green bin for rubbish and a brown bin for garden stuff, but the council have now decided to spend thousands on recycling boxes. Where am I supposed to put them??

This also means that wheelie bins will now only be emptied every fortnight, which I think is unhygeinic, particularly in the summer. They smell enough now when they're emptied twice a week, so god knows what it will be like then.....

On the subject of council tax, in South Australia they give you a rebate if you take your own rubbish to the dump - what a great idea!! :)

I just pop in now and then.... :)

I was just making the point that a household of 7 should not generate more rubbish than a household of 5. Today I have 7 visitors - they haven't brought any rubbish with them. The food I am cooking has no packaging, the drinks are all served in glasses or cups. If you buy carefully and avoid products with excessive packaging you will find you can seriously reduce your household waste. I started this just a couple of years ago and have been amazed at how easy it is to reduce rubbish. i.e. if you buy your pizza at the supermarket pizza counter it doesn't cost anymore and you don't have a large cardboard box to dispose of. Buy all your fruit and veg loose and the plastic bags the supermarket like you to use for grouping together items should be left in the supermarket when you transfer all your fruit and veg to one carrier bag that you have brought from home.

A large family can often generate less waste by buying larger sizes i.e. 4 pint carton of milk instead of 1 or 2 pint cartons. Bottles of milk are better but the price is prohibitive. I remember the days when if you took your empty bottles back to the shop you had money back. I think this should be reintroduced. Instead manufacturers are moving away from tins and bottles to plastic containers which are difficult to recycle.

The only thing I won't go back to reusable on is Tissues!!

    Poppy,

I wasn't suggesting your comment was rude and my reply was not an attack on such. It was actually thought provoking.  I was therefore trying to understand why (at times) my bin is so full, it isnt actually the packaging etc from supermarket food etc, it is really more to do with the fact (i think) that because of the amount of visitors my house has with 5 kids they all tend to have friends round very often (in fact i think some feel its open house constantly lol) but especially with the eldest daughter who see' fit to bring everyone back to my house (anything from 5 extra girls) after a shopping trip and then all procede to get ready for a night out, filling my bin with empty boxes bags etc from their wares. i wouldnt dream of telling them to take their rubbish with them so i guess its unavoidable at times. If they are not out for the night they will have a sleep over and order pizza etc and god knows what they do but the amount of rubbish filled carrier bags that are produced after is quite staggering :o but that said as i pay almost £2000 a yr in council tax i really dont think its unfair to expect the bin men to take a little extra occassionally.

£2k council tax :o that is almost twice as much as I pay and I moan (band F £1100 and rising).

If I paid £2k I would want them to come and knock my door, collect my rubbish and wash out my wheelie bin LOL

I am not only concerned about the increases in council tax each year which is bad for all but those on low incomes/fixed incomes are finding it even more difficult many dont get any help whatsoever. Enough of that now on to the bins. As I live on a a very busy street, I shallent name names but it is notorious for traffic problems (been on tv) sorry I should say street. I am concerned about wheelie bins left obstructing the pavement and thus making it dangerous for pedestians.

I believe that the fault in many cases is down to the amount of time dustmen have to do there job. Again its down to money and council tax. In my area council tax has gone up over 100% since it came out last year it was 17.5% this years was 9% and the bloddy government who I blame entirely do not give out enough in funding and thus councils have to put council tax to make up the shortfall. As for the North where I live the press have often said that they get more funding it may well be the case in some areas, it certainly isnt in ours.

Sorry to mention council tax slightly off topic but its to do with why I belive councils have put pressue on there staff to get a move on. I dont work for the council either.

i live in a 2 bed terrace house, my garden isn't too big and a wheelie bin really sticks out like a sore thumb if you know what i mean?

    But now we're getting another bin.....and not just 1 another 3 !!!!

A grey one (the same size as the normal black bins) for garden waste.
A blue one (a sort of big toy box size) for paper and card
and a red one (same size as the blue) for plastic and cans etc.

Now i'm all up for recycling and i do think it's a really good idea, but WHERE THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO PUT THEM ???
If i leave them in the street people will moan, and if i leave them in the garden the children can't play ......so what do i do?

And also (I'm on my soap box now ;)) I actually am not sure what i pay my council tax for.

I live (or did until last week ;D) on my own, now my bin is emptied every other week because living on my own i couldn't fill it, now granted i can and it is needed.

But what else do i pay for, the thing that really annoys me is that i live quite close to the town centre and the police station is probably about a 10 minute walk away, but and the big but is that it isn't manned, i could be walking home one night and have somebody grab me outside the actual station and there would be no-body there to help.

if i call the police then it goes through to the town 10 miles away! So how long does it take to get mugged or raped??

"But don't worry love they're on the way" !!

And now they are putting my council tax up again!!!!

I used to live in an area which had much better recycling facilities - collections of tins, plastic and paper from home every 2 weeks and rubbish weekly. Also gave us compost bins. Took my own glass to the bottle bank and got rid of all that extra stuff we all seem to acquire to the charity shop, when we moved.

Now I'm 'oop north', paying more council tax, (nearly £2k for me too) and they've only just started providing us with green sacks for garden refuse! Rubbish is in sacks (usually attacked by the local cats/squirrels etc) and paper collected every 2 weeks. I'm ashamed to say that we're not very good at recycling our plastic/tin cans now it's not collected. I'm thinking of getting a couple of boxes and re-training Mr TM to put items in them, as before (he's far worse than me - he's also a terrible MSE). I can take stuff to the tip myself when needed, as I pass it on the way to No 2 TM's pre-school.
