Wheelie bins

Options
I haven't got a problem with the concept of wheelie bins as such it's just that on collection day they end up scattered all over the road and the Council doesn't seem to care about the obstruction their workmen are creating.

Also the bin at my house is 16 years old now and over the course of the years and repeated emptying the lid has become dished presumably where it has banged against the lorry and on rainy days when you tilt it up to push it in water pours off the top and all down your trousers, as happened to me last night which just about capped off a really crappy day.

I wish we could have wheelie bins too. Bags are a right pain.

I'm also generally happy with wheelie bins and have been surprised that others dont have them  :o,  but my gripe is that the bin men wont empty them if the lid is ever so slightly up on the bin, there is any grass/cuttings in it,  if they think its a bit heavy to push  ???   but also that they wont take anything else at the side of the bin if its full, as a family of 7 what am i supposed to do, jump on the bus with my bags of rubbish and find the nearest tip :-[

oh well, vent over  :-X  ::)

Contact your Council with 7 in the household you should be entitled to either a bigger bin or a second bin.

As you say I cann't believe they are not in use throughout the country now so maybe I was being selfish starting this thread.

When it comes to recycling it would appear that no 2 Council's run a twin bin or recycling programme the same way. For example I can put bottles, newspapers, cardboard and cans in my twin bin but no garden waste whereas my parents who only live 31/2 miles away but come under a different Council can only use their twin bin for garden waste which means it stands empty for 5 months of the year.

  • Just curious but l assume the council tax is cheaper in areas that do not have wheelie bins?  It just seems to be one of simple things l would expect if l was paying hundreds of pounds.

I cannot remember a time when l have not had a wheelie bin even back when l was living at my family home.

I would write to the council and enquire as to why they don't have them.
    Sense is not common.

i pay the same council tax as a friend of mine under the same council, she has a wheelie bin for garden waste (and household peeling, teabags etc), a paper recycling collection, and now a glass collection.

me i get 1 black bag a week (even though i awlays put 2 out) and take all my recycling to the tip myself.

    drives me mad.

Me too. My Council Tax is horrendous. They do 'give' us black bin bags but they don't fit my dustbin ??? so I have to buy ones that do fit and use the ones they provide for extra rubbish. We also have a Green Box scheme for recyclable stuff although we cant put in envelopes or cardboard but my friend who live only a few miles away in a wheelie bin area can >:(

Hum, my neighbour seems to think wheelie bins are for 'nice' rubbish, seems to think beer cans should be put in a plastic bag and slung over the back gate... or in my back yard.

So glad when i saw the for sale sign go up the other day ::)

We don't have wheelie bins either. I personally am glad. Although it wouldn't be a problem in my local areas (we all have drives) huge parts of the city consists of terrace houses. This would mean either leaving the bins outside the house 7 days a week - cluttering up the pavement or wheeling them through the house weekly.

We have black bags which must not be out before 7pm and are usually collected by 9am the next day. Fortnightly we can put out green bags for recyling of paper, bottles and cans. The bags say no envelopes. I enquired why and the reason given is the window envelopes can not be recycled. If your rip off this window the envelope is fine. Our local tip has a sign saying that every tonne of rubbish deposited at the skip (not in the recyling bins) cost £43 to dispose in a land fill site.

To reduce the amount of rubbish our household generates (and I don't understand why 7 people generate that much more rubbish):

I reuse carrier bags and usually refuse them in shops
Follow a tip from Steve Wright and leave excess packaging in Tesco's for them to dispose of (if enough do it they will get the message)
I buy just one newspaper a week and read the rest on line (I want the weekly tv pages)
I return junk mail to sender
I refuse catalogues - I have emailed Next so many times telling them to keep their catalogues when I order on line but they insist on sending them
I return excess coat hangers that seem to grow in my house even though I always tell them I don't want the hanger (funny they are mostly M&S but I don't buy much from them).
I send outgrown shoes and clothes to charity shops.
I do not buy prepackaged vegetables.

We now put out 1 black bag per fortnight
Green recyling bags once a month.
