Cat urine smell (ewwwwwwwwwwwww), how to get rid of ???

Options
We don't have a cat but that doesn't stop them doing their little tinkles in our garden.

I usually have to jet wash twice a month to get rid of the smell but is there anything i can use thats a little less harsh on my poor old patio and also any way to deter them both coming into the garden in the first place AND if they do dare venture in, to stop them doing their little "oi this is my garden, bogoff" wee's :)

Any suggestions (bar getting a dog) welcome :)

    Hiya :)

I'll move your post across to our Pet Care board where you'll find plenty of help with this one.

    Good luck :)

  • Hi,

I don't know whether this applies to outdoors as well as indoors, but if you use household cleaners, they often contain ammonia, which the cats mistake for another cat marking 'their' territory. They then return, smell the 'other cat' (which is you and your cleaning) and make another little deposit! So if you are using something strong to wash the smell away, it could be making it worse.

I'm not sure what definitely works outside, but I know that some people swear by dried orange peel. Cats hate the smell, apparently, although my cat used to just move it out the way!

Another method that really does work is urine from one of the big cats - if you don't live near a zoo, there are pellets you can buy, made, I believe, of lion dung. :D

I once went on one of those 'feed the big cat' days, which was wonderful, until the siberian tiger decided to mark me as his own. :o He sprayed over the arm of my fleece jacket, so I had to take it off and wrap it in a bag in the boot of the car. When we got home, our old cat was sleeping in the garden. I waved the jacket under his nose - I've never seen him move so fast! The poor little thing was petrified. He spent the rest of the evening on the lookout for tigers!

Thanks Lizzieanne and never realised about the smell of ammonia, that could be a good point.

As regards the tiger dung, i think this one will have to be passed, but i would love to see the local cats react to that LOL

There are a few sprays you can buy from most pet shops, unfortunately, all but a few of them wash off in the rain. Though there is one available that once it dries in, it won't wash off for a good few weeks. A daily spraying should get rid of them.

You can also try pepper, tea tree oil, orange peel and pine cones.

Wash the patio with white vinegar as it will get rid of the 'markers' from urine and clean it up. A lot cheaper than the special cleaners too.
  • White vinegar! Works a treat. Oh yes and orange peel as mentioned above really does work, its great in big pots etc

  • my gran always had plastic bottles half filled with water in her flower beds to keep the cats from using it as a toilet...it did work...perhaps and idea to try if you didnt want to use chemicals.
