As far as finding out what the areas are like, my friend called into the local police station on a quiet day and said I'm a single woman, moving to the area, where would you advise me to avoid.

Also take a look at the school results. Even if you don't have kids. Generally speaking, the better the results the better the area. Obviously there are exceptions to the rule but as a yard stick i've found it to be pretty accurate.

have you been to the area you want to move to and put adverts in the local shops
