thanks - keep it coming folks!
One thing, I think we will need to revise plans as to dates. No way can I withstand 102F no matter how great the scenery and experiences!
What would be the best time of year to go to deep South to have good weaather but not these extremes? Not too worried about getting to the big festivals

I was in New Orleans at New Year and it was comfortable lightweight jacket weather with the occasional heavy shower in the afternoon. I have also been to Atlanta, Florida and southern Texas at the same of year and found the weather very much to my liking ie not too hot & sticky.0

I was In Georgia and South Carolina in May last year and it was perfect holiday weather. Sunny and about 82f average with low humidity and no rain. Will just add that the people were so friendly and welcoming too. Live music everywhere and of a great standard. Fantastic trip.0

A few years ago we did a small road trip from Nashville, to Knoxville to Lexinton to Louisville to Owensboro to Evansville to Paducah to Nashville.
It was a lovely trip and we saw parts of America that the vast majority of UK visitors would never see. Great stuff. We went in May/June an the weather was in thge high 80s/low 90's each day with really comfortable humidity..0
