I don't think you can find a bank that doesn't charge you for this. Switching will not change anything.
Don't you have agreed overdraft limit? There is no charge for using agreed overdraft - only interest. And if you were overdrawn accidentally why the charge is £50(£100)?

I fully understand your frustration now, but I still think it is better just to bite the bullet. All banks and BSs are the same with very small differences when it comes to fees and charges.
Does anybody know any exceptions?
You did not explain why A&L wouldn't give you an account with an overdraft. Only if you have a chance to get agreed overdraft elswhere it is worth thinking about switching.0 -

Very strange. Only their basic accounts don't have overdraft facility. Even simple Current Account has it with the same reate for authorised and unauthorised overdrafts, but £5 monthly authorised overdraft fee though (still smaller than £25+). If they refuse to give you agreed limit I think it is really worth thinking about some other bank. I think most of them will offer this to you if you have regular monthly income. I like Nationwide. Cahoot gives £250 fee-free and interest-free limit to everybody accepted.0

I've never heard that joint account requires higher income that single one
. I like Nationwide for very good online banking. This is my main account with all DDs and SOs. I do everything online. As a result I visit branch very rarely - only to deposit cheques (and even this I usually do via their ATM) - and cannot say anything bad or good about their CS. Never had any problems with telephone helpline. Their e-savings account always has competitive interest rate, now 5%. And, I think you know, their cards are the best for using abroad.
