Getting a "no-claims" discount for someone who's previously been on company insurance

Evening all,

For three years, I've been driving a car which I bought through my employer. It's a hire-purchase deal with a contract that expires in 5 days time. I pay a lump sum off at the end of the contract and the car is then mine. The deal comes inclusive of insurance and maintenance.

I got a letter from the "accident management" company confirming that I've reported zero incidents with my car.

I've been searching around for insurance and have found out that the insurance cover that came with the contract was not in my name, but rather in my employers name. I'm therefore, according to Direct Line and Norwich Union, not eligable for any no-claims discounts - as my employer picks up those bonusses. I went to confused.com as recommended in the moneysavingexpert article, but got quotes no better than if I had zero no claims discounts.

Does anyone know if there is a company that treats claims history letters from the employers insurance scheme as being equivalent to a no claims discount? I assume the no-claims discount is a measure of how risky you are to insure?

How on earth to company car drivers get decent insurance quotations when they come off their company car schemes?

Anyone with advice on where to go would be most helpful.

Regards

Anthony Dyer

  • Most co. cars are down as business name but you have to be a named driver of your vehicle. I was under the impression that most major companies would accept your letter if you can be identified as the sole or daily driver. You may need to talk to your former employer for a letter to confirm this, thats if it doesn't already confirm you as named driver.

Try to get someone good on the phone ( no out calls to india) when calling companies. If you can prove you were the driver there really shouldn't be a problem.

If all else fails have a look at the link below.

Try Tesco or A Plan. You should be entitled to 3yrs NCD.
  • hi anthony,i work for norwich union direct and as far as i was aware we do offer company car drivers some ncd as long as you were sole user of company car and that you took it home with you at night, that you were claim free, that you have dropped out of the company car scheme within the last year, and you will also have to provide your company's name and contact details. Hope this helps.

Hi Antony. I found myself in a similar position 4 years ago. I had 4 years no claims discount on my company car but few ins co's would accept it and were only offering me 1 year. It was working out v expensive. NU would accept it but with a higher prem  . I eventually ended up with Esure who accepted my 4 years ncd. The prem was slightly more than most but it was worth it for a year when I could shop around with 5 years ncd evidence. HTH.
