Volkswagen Golf

    Cool, any more tips?

Look at some alternative makes and models.

VW are ok cars, ok made etc but are no better than other makes and behind many - it's only their self-marketing that talks about their quality !

See what £14k to £15k will buy you elsewhere. Even if you decide you want a VW and nothing else, it will give you something else to show the VW dealer and make him work that much harder to do you a deal.

That's good to hear, but dont be afraid to see what else is on offer.

If nothing else you can judge others quality and what you get today for your money. There are a lot of very good cars out there and manufacturers and dealers who are very keen to do business and deals.

Do you think a VW dealer might do a better deal if you told him/her you were going to buy a XXXX which is both better specified and cheaper.
  • Please re-read our message....don't expend time and effort going to try and 'haggle' with a dealer for a car he cannot even order at the moment.

Lack of stock means lack of discount in any marketplace, but the total inability to order the engine you want at VW means that sitting with a dealer who's got a hard enough job already on this model at the moment isn't going to bear any fruit, as he can't sell you the car anyway while the order-banks are closed on the 1.4 TSi's. He cannot even take your order, all he can do is try and sell you the 1.6 115ps which is being re-drafted in to ease the problems meeting demand on the new 1.4 TSi 122ps, which is the one you really want.

Either wait until May'ish when the ordering should re-open on that engine for VW dealers, as the plant will have sorted out their backlog across Europe, or pick a totally different brand with a similar engine.

Most manuf'rs runs their deals on a calendar quarter basis, so most incentives at the moment on key brands are for cars able to be registered by 31st March - it is too late to factory-order most now in time for that deadline so it comes down to what ready stock there is in the next 6 weeks.

Some manuf'rs (like Ford) allow some of their selected headlining models to be price protected against any change on 1st April if the car cannot be delivered in time for end of March, which is a good way to go if you don't want to feel pressured into taking remaining available stock which is a compromise (in terms of engine/colour/spec' etc) against ordering the car you really want when spending this sort of money.

Hope that helps! Too many people get railroaded into 'bargains' when it isn't anywhere close to the car they really wanted to buy and spend thousands of their hard-earned pounds on, but fell for a 'must buy now' deal that seemed to good to turn down, then regretted it.

Stay focused on your requirements for your money and then assess the best route to get it at a good price. We see a lot of people spend frantic long weeks trying to nip & tuck a price by a few quid here & there, only do it for so long that by the time they've made a decision it is too late to order it at that price as the manuf'r has changed the dealer's margins or the actual price of the car, and they have to start all over again!

Have you considered a Seat then? They are owned and manufactured by VW but with more style and originality. If you were to buy a Leon you will essentially get a VW golf with a sexier body, more equipment and for a cheaper price.

I don't mind getting a 1.6 FSI but it is less efficent and the tax band is more expensive.
