Question about Virgin Mobile direct debit option

I'm planning to go overseas for a year, and I thought it would be a good idea to 'store' my mobile number (previously on vodafone contract) with Virgin. I'm just wondering whether I need to keep using the phone every now again to keep it active even though I'm with their direct debit option? Any opinions?

Thanks. :)

Whatever Virgin Payg payment option you are on.You must send a text or make a call every 180 days, or more,to keep it active.
Could you not leave it with someone you can rely on to send a text now and again.Or take it with you if it works where you are going and send the odd text yourself. The other option is if you are not likely to get lots of calls on it, is to divert to a relatives landline.Which means you can make a short chargeable call to/on it yourself when you need to.

Thanks pricefighter, I appreciate your comments. :)

I went with Virgin so that I'd have it as a useful backup to use on roaming if the need arose, as I plan to get a local SIM when I get to Australia. It would have been useful if there wasn't a non-activity limitation so that I could just forget about it, but I suppose I can understand virgin's reasons.

I'll probably be using it occasionally anyway as Virgin's roaming GPRS rates are very competitive in comparison to other UK networks.

Just a sidenote: unfortunately, virgin don't allow diverts to numbers other than voicemail :(

I like the other ideas though! :)
