Cairo is fascinating, with a great deal to see and do. Relaxing it is not.

Try taking an overnight train, first class. You pay very little; you get a comfortable bed and privacy. You save the cost of a hotel for the night, and since most of the journey is made while you are sleeping you don't waste any holiday time on getting there.

Totally agree! Cairo is wonderful and I can't wait to go back (101 days to go and counting!) but I wouldn't reccomend someone going there for the main part of their holiday if they wanted to relax. Combining it with a week on the coast works very well though to get the best of both worlds.

We're combining a nile cruise with 10 days in Cairo and I'm under no illusions that its going to be a relaxing holiday! 10 days is probably too long in Cairo for most people (we only need that long to make sure we get to see everyone while we're there without having to go out every single night *lol*) but I would say 3 nights/4 days is probably plenty of time to see the sights and soak up the atmosphere and then leave whilst you are still enjoying it ;)

As there are a few Cairo fans in here, can anyone give me a recent first hand account on the various Cities of the Dead? I believe there was some kind of ban put in place recently on visiting them due to perceived bad publicity, but I don't know how official or effective this ban is? Also, if one only had 24 hrs in Cairo, what would folk recommend?

There's nowt much on Trip Advisor and

There's nowt wrong with Cairo, it is a fascinating city and is a tube and taxi ride away from the Pyramids. Nobody should miss seeing these wonderous things.

You will need a full day for the Pyramids, but if you set off early enough you might want to go to the El Kalili market in Cairo when you're done with the Pyramids.

Wholeheartedly agree. It's fab though and well worth a visit in my opinion.
:D Make a list of important things to do today. At the top, put 'eat chocolate'. Now, you'll get at least one thing done today. :D

I am thinking of booking a holiday in Sharm. Can someone post information on insects which may be encountered? I have read various accounts of swarms of flies spoiling holidays.

No no, they do have an underground, and very cheap it is too. takw the train to Giza station and then get a cab to the Pyramids. Train fare about 7p, cab fare about £1. Negotiate the cab fare before you get in.
