Experts on Egypt

Hi,

We are interested in visiting Sharm El Sheik in Sept this year. Hubby wants to visit the Pyramids, Valley of the Kings etc etc etc.

I have heard these touristy places are too far to visit in a 1 week holiday and that a Nile cruise would be more suitable.

Should we do Sharm one year and a Nile cruise next year ?

Sharm looks good for beaches and relaxing which is what we normally do on hol. I have found the Hilton Sharm Dreams for £26 per room per night B&B which looks a bargain.

Please advise !

You could combine a Nile cruise with a week on the Red Sea but the pyramids are further away in Cairo.

You can do a day trip to Cairo from Sharm or Hurghada

You coukd do a day trip to Luxor from Hurghada.

Cairo is not a place you would want to stay.

How about a holiday to Sharm & a day (or two) trip to Cairo.

Then another holiday a Nile cruise or Hurghada taking in Luxor.
  • I stayed in luxor before and we got the train to cairo to see the pyramids we obviously went to the valley of the kings in luxor. You might be rushing it to get to luxor and then cairo, its a long train journey 8 hours or so between them but you can do it over night.
I'd say maybe a cruise on a separate occasion unless you do have the energy to be moving a lot because your talking at least two days in luxor and the same in cairo plus the getting between and however long you want in sharm, you don't want to rush your holiday.

You'd be best doing the Pyramids and Cairo from Sharm, then a seperate journey along the Nile for other sites. The Pyramids are really a bit of a let down, stuck next to that great dump that is Giza, but I knew what to expect. I liked Cairo, although I was only there for three nights. Stay at the Nile Hilton, which is next door to the Egyptian museum, the main reason for visiting Cairo.
  • Thanks

It seems to mush travelling during the stay for my liking. Its either visiting the cities or the beach and not both.
I have found a 2 centre holiday for £1100 each. We found a week B&B in Sharm for £875 for both of us !
Hubby thinks we might get cheap flights from Sharm to Luxor. He only wants to go for the sites.

Best ways to fly it - £100 return with Egyptair and takes an hour. I flew from Luxor to Cairo then onto Aswan for a few quid more.I did use trains in Egypt, great experience, and cheap!

A tip I picked up from Tripadvisor...When visiting the Egyptair homepage for the first time you are asked to enter the name of your country. If you say Egypt then the prices are about half the price compared with if you say United Kingdom.

I disagree with you. I love Cairo and have stayed there and hope to again before too long. It's huge city and with so much happening there too. It's a train and taxi ride to the Pyramids. It all depends on what you want. If you're after some culture then Cairo is excellent However, if you're really into beaches and water things then Sharm would be great.

I've also stayed in Luxor and while it was an elightening experience, I have to say that I probably wont want to go there again. But Cairo is a different matter and I'd go there anytime.

Be careful doing that and make sure you check the terms and conditions very very carefully: like many things in Egypt there is one price for locals/residents and another for foreigners. We found when we lived there that we couldn't use the cheap "egyptian" egyptair prices as we didn't have an egyptian ID card or proof of residency. You might find that you buy the flights cheaper, but that you can't actually use them and end up paying twice :o
