I tried phoning BT for the "Privacy" package and was told that because I am with Talk Talk and do not use BT for my calls, I do not qualify for the FREE service. I could of course pay for Caller Display but the call saving is too much to go back to BT

You only have to make 'some' calls via BT to qualify. Another thread (I'm sure someone will give the link) finds that BT reckon this only needs to be 1 call per billing period. Prefixing with 1280 , rather than 18866 or whatever will route the call via BT - so when you HAVE to make an 0870 or 0845 call, stick 1280 in front and have Caller Display free.

I pay line rental to onetel, I do not receive a bill from BT and so cannot use 1280 to get the free caller id.

I have been in contact with onetel about the fact that I could receive free caller ID if I went back to BT, they say that they my comments have been passed to the their pricing operation.

As BT is going to raise their line rental charges in the next few months and reduce the charge to third party operators like onetel, I suspect onetel will wait for this to happen before deciding anything...

If you only took one of their call tariffs then it wouldn't include line rental but depending on which TalkTalk tariff it may include an extra monthly cost.

Some forum members are going for the Tele2 medium package that offers free evening&weekend calls (without a monthly fee) until the end of this year and then probably swapping over to another provider after this.

Also, JustDialSaver Lite are also doing free evening & weekend calls (without a monthly fee) with no date specified so it could be for life. Each individual call though that is longer than 2 hours will become chargable (TalkTalk's is actually only 70mins). JustDialSaver was discussed in little more detail here and here.

Many thanks for all that info. I think I may keep my BT line rental, use 18866 just now, and have a look at the links you kindly gave when I have some more time!! Thanks again.
