I am thinking of buying some of the dryer balls from Lakeland, especially as there is a good code around on the discount codes and vouchers board. Are they effective on towels - ours are likely boards as in a hard water area. And, is two in the dryer at a time enough? Thanks

I have a couple of these and imo do absolutely nothing apart from make a lot of noise.
  • I have 2 expensive fancy ones from Lakeland
2 from Tesco which cost £3
and 2 from Poundland for £1

They all seem to be much the same - the lakeland ones have less pointy points - all bang around in the same way, all seem pretty sturdy. Not sure whether they make any difference - probably have noticed that they soften clothes, denim etc, whether they reduce drying time, I don't know

I used to tumble dry everything, and I mean everything. Now I use my dryer once in a blue moon to get bedding dry the same day if the weather's changed and I can't get it out on the line. Our leccy bill (and carbon footprint) has dropped massively. I had no idea they were so energy hungry!

They're almost all C rated because the idea is to turn the energy into hot air which is then mostly wasted.
I bought an A rated one in the sales after Xmas.....it cuts the electricity by half but takes 8 hours to dry clothes on the sensor setting. You're supposed to put it on at night and leave it to run...spins occasionally, pumps a bit of hot air in occasionally....but not great if you need speed.

Do they soften your towels - I would get anything that softened my towels - we are in a hard water area!

yes I think they do - hard to be sure as tumbling softens them anyway, but I think i detect a softening effect

i always use a timer on my tumble dryer to come on at just after midnight - saves a fortune ! in summer i obviously dont bother using it but, british weather being what it is, and a child who creates more washing than i could dream of, its necessary.

This will only save money if you are on economy 7 as any other tariff it is the same price day or night.

Also, if you put it directly on radiators this means your heating system has to work harder to get a room thermstat tempurture (sp!) so costs you more and can contribute to condensation/ mould problems!

    Exciting knowledge eh...:o
Green and minimal chemicals is the new black- I know a fair old bit about sustainability, specially energy and transport stuff. If I can help- please ask!
