Is it me or do others here have bad experiences using Nationwide's online banking service? It seems to change your log on details at it's own will. I have to keep re-registering for the service as it locks me out each time.

I want to get a flex account now in addition to my credit card, but I can't as my account has been locked out!

It's a pathetic way to secure your systems in my opinion - why use two different phrases - passnumber and memorable date - to refer to the same number? Also why have a memorable place and memorable name when they only ever refer to "memorable data"?

As if all this isn't enough, their online system doesn't work that well with Firefox  .

Sort it out Nationwide!

The customer number is a unique to you number generated by NW and posted out to you when you apply for online access that tells them who you are. This will not change if you forget your details and have three incorrect attempts at logging on.

The memorable data is the date (or other memorable thing) you gave NW.

The passnumber is a random six digit number generated by NW which they post out to you. If you get this wrong three times in succession you will need to request a new passnumber which will be different from your previous number(s).

These three things are all different!

I've had no problems using it (for the past three - four years). I have my flex account, e-savers account and credit card all linked up to it. The pass number and memborable date / name are two different pieces of information.

Also I use Nationwides online facilities with Firefox without any major issue.

No problems for more than 5 years ...

From experience with many different bank I know that most of banks have more secure system for current accounts as opposit to CC companies that usually require only username and password.

'data' and 'date' are not the same. During registration you provide NW whith three kinds of memorable data:
    -place
    -date
    -name
Any of them can be used as 'memorable data' during log-on. In case you foget one of them you can use other.

Hi eagle, I did also have this problem a few weeks back & it was infuriating not to be able to access my accounts. I ended up re-registering with exactly the same details & ,touch wood, so far all has been ok.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Well in my experience other banks/cc providers rarely ask for so many security questions.

Thanks for pointing that out, although I am perfectly aware of the differences that you point out and indeed the details that registration requires. That was the whole point of my original post!!!!

I find it unbelievable that they could ask you any one of three possible data - when I enter one, it doesn't accept it. I then try the alternative and that gets rejected too and eventually I am locked out. And I know I am entering the correct information each time.

Why is it that LloydsTSB online banking asks you for specific characters of a memorable bit of information along with a username and password. Also, AmEx only has username and password log in - nothing else is required to use the online service. Nice and simple and just as secure. But Nationwide requries you to have three different bits of memorable info with a username and password on top of that! How can this be justified?

    Thanks pin.

So you don't have the problem whereby on the left-hand pane the writing is messed up and goes off into the right-hand pane, making it impossible to read?
  • I like Nationwide's website and whole internet banking operation. I have all of my main accounts with them and find it easy to shunt money between accounts, get statements and pay bills. They have also been very receptive to feedback and enhancement suggestions in the 5 years or so that I have used it. For me, the use of different memorable data and the mouse-selected PIN makes me feel safer as I rotate them on every login. I've never had any problems with it at all.

I used to have similar problems with Halifax Online,

Most of it was my fault due to using capital letters in names etc in my application and memorable security details. Now having inputted everything in lower case, and dates with spaces and not - or/, nothing has gone wrong since.

    Well,
Barclays: surname + membership number + passcode(5 dig) + memorable word (2 random letters)
    A&L: Customer ID(12-dig) + Customer PIN(5-dig) + (for every transfer) Password (2 random letters)
Lloyds TSB: User ID + Password + Memorable Information (3 random symbols from something very long!)
Halifax: Username + Password + Memorable Information (randomly selected)
Smile: sort code + account number + security code + memorable data (randomly selected - not your choice as with NW)
    ......
What banks is your experience with?

Amex is credit card. As I told, most of credit card companies require only username and password. And this is quite understandable.

Nationwide doesn't require you to remember all three bits - as opposite to Smile, for example. I remember and always use only one. Two other bits are for your own convenience - in case you have problems with the first one. And you always have a choice what to use: date, place or name.

Those that I mentioned you conveniently removed from your quoted text.

I know that it's a credit card (I am not as stupid as you make me sound, despite your comments and rather ironically bad spelling), I fail to see your point here though.

So you're saying you can enter any of those three at my will?

If that is true, they don't make it clear enough to tell you what is required of you - as other people have indicated here in this thread. Which again is my point of this thread. I can't see why you're getting so worked up for. Do you work for Nationwide or something?

In my opinion having three pieces of memorable data and asking only one (any one of the three) to be entered makes it more insecure as it gives a possible thief 3 opportunities to get in, as oposed to 1.
