Being a postman of over 25 years,do any of you actually realise how many people process your mail before the postie who delivers your mail actually gets his hands on it if at all.I have signed up for a lot of these so called freebies on here and only received one or two,I deliver my own mail so either I am a light fingered postie or everyone in the royal mail is on the fiddle or maybe that the companys are not sending them in the first place,Stealing from royal mail isnt just a sackable offence it could also lead to going to prison,Im not saying all posties are whiter than white, but risking your job for a few samples of perfume etc etc etc !!!!!!

Just to add Dave, that most of us value our posties highly - our one is great - unfailingly friendly and cheerful, and a temendous credit to the Mail. I'm sure that's true of the vast majority too, aside from one or two "bad apples" who normally get spotted quite quickly.

I think if RM has these problems you can usually start with the agency staff in the larger sorting offices to see where the problems might be.

BTW, you have reminded me tho' of a story my mother told me of my late grandfather who was a sub postmaster in the West Country, many years back. A postie was stealing mail and binning the rest of it. The locals realised, and suffice it to say that my grandfather picked him up and threw him through a hedge before the police were alerted...aye, those were the days for workplace discipline! ;):D

I am also a postman so you can imagine, i find it very annoying, if not slanderous, that some people choose to call all postman thieves. Its amazing just how many people have the same complaint about us as soon as anyone else says about missing mail etc. If the problem was that bad, i am sure there would be a lot more posties sacked and jailed.
I deal with mail that has vague and incomplete addresses and they are not all handwritten, a lot come pre typed from companies. You dont get to hear just how many millions of items RM get like this daily, but as far as anyone else is concerned, the postie has nicked them. Please give us a break.

  • I used to be a postie .. I packed it in because me fags used to keep getting nicked when I was in the sorting office.
  • I agree with Edna, my postie of about 6 months is a pleasant, kind and helpful man. My cat walks with him and it's all quite idyllic really. I was very suprised to hear that people don't get samples etc as mine are always on the mat no problem.

His predecessor, however, used to give me quite a lot of bank statement type letters for other people and I often wondered if something of mine went astray.

Does the Postie have any control over the bundles of letters etc or is all the sorting done at the warehouse?
