I have bought loads of stuff from Amazon and quite a bit from ebay. Tried selling a few books on Amazon but nothing happened - maybe I have less than popular taste!!!! Haven't dared to try rbay for selling. . . . yet. Honestly, I have loads of stuff to get rid off and could certainly do with the money:eek: .

I agree with keeping this on this part of the site!

I like the self help book ideas to sell. I shall now scour our local charity shops in more detail!

I also noticed that our local library often sell second hand books. Has anyone tried and had success (or not) in selling these via amazon?

I always put my books up for sale on Amazon. Two years ago when I was off work for 6 months and struggling financially I clicked on the little "sell your here" button. I had hoped to get a few pounds to help out. In one month I actually made more than I earn a month. That money lasted me 2 months (very proud of myself I was). Now when I buy a book I always check Amazon first to see what sort of prices it is going for. If it is one of the 1p ones then it goes to my local 2ndhand book store where I usually get between 10 & 50p for it.
The books that I find sell well are university text books. The 2ndhand stores round the universities tend to pay up to 25% for good condition textbooks. On Amazon I found I could get minimum of 50%. Even if postage is £4 on a book I've paid £40 for I still make more money than if I had sold it to a local 2ndhand book store.
The book I made most money on was a text book that cost me £7 to buy. There were no other copies up for sale and it was on someone's want list. They had a price of £35 on it. I sold it for £30 and got a lovely email from the buyer to say thanks for not ripping her off over the price and for dispatching so quickly.

I usually add something along the lines of 'I always try to post the same day I receive payment.' and email the buyer when I have dispatched the book.

Don't forget it is not just books you can sell on Amazon. Although not as big or as popular as Ebay Amazon also have their own auction site.
  • Hi saver sam - I don't think that library books will sell at a good price, they would have to be very unusual or out of print for a buyer to be keen enough to want them, if they were amongst other books they wouldn't look too good

Are they recent books about the war or books from the period of the war?

The main ones are a set of Time-Life books. Think there are 21 in the set. Hard backed. Printed in 1980.

  • Rebob - have you searched them on ebay or amazon? if they don't look to sell too well there I would take them to an auction house
  • Rebob try your local newspaper, quite often there are people wanting anything to do with the war in the classified ads. I also sold a ton of textbooks on Amazon and made really good money, especially on the marketing ones. Must be a popular study course!

There is a scheme on eBay for a trading assistant to sell for you, this is the link http://shiptrack.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?TradingAssistant although I don't know much about how easy/practical it is.
There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.
