mondeo 2.0 tdci advice please!!
Hi there! Does anyone know much about this model? We need a new car and have decided to opt for a deisel. I have been told that this is a great model I have £5000max to spend. From what I can make out this model was released around 04. I have seen this car for sale (privately) for £4800 62,000 on the clock which I am told is low for a deisel, however it is a 02 plate and I think that it is infact a Tddi I don't know much about the tddi and wonder if anyone can tell me the difference between this and a tdci and is the car is value for money?
Any thoughts or suggestions welcome

i think it will be a tdci,i dont think ford made a tddi.
havent had a mondeo but others on here rave about them, sounds pretty good mileage for an 02 plate aswell.
im sure some others will be along to tell you all about them soon.
but beware this board has a few trolls who dont like anything....work permit granted!0 -
Ford made a TDDi and a TDCi. The difference is like night and day. TDCi have far more poke. Go for the TDCi 130 and go for an 04 plate or later which is the facelift model. DO NOT get hung up about a 6 speed gearbox. I have one and have used it a total of once for about 20 miles on the M74 but it hammered fuel consumption. Also try and get one with heated windscreen. Zetec for a sporty ride, Ghia for a waft-o-matic ride. Currently getting 53MPG out of mine on A roads and town driving.
Do not be put off by 100,000 mile cars. Most are ex-fleet cars and come with full main dealer service history. Service intervals are 12500 miles. There are thousands of these cars out there so do not touch one without full main dealer history. I bought mine at 103,000 miles. Looks like new and drives like it - the interior shows no signs of wear and there's not even stonechipping on mine.
It's a timing chain, not a belt so will last the life of the engine with regular oil changes.
Only thing to watch out for is knocking on the rear suspension as it means the subframe bushes are shot. Used to mean a new subframe but Ford finally released a bush replacement kit. Even better, Superflex do polybushes which are £60 a set and an hour a side to fit. Most of the motor trade are unaware of the replacement bushes so you can use it to knock £500 off the price.0 -

I had a TDCI Mondeo Estate, put 117,000 miles on it in 3 years - couldn't fault it.
Would disagree on the comment about the 6 speed box, however. Used it all the time, (above about 55 mph). If you do a lot of town driving you just won't use it, on a long run it comes into its own. Once drove from Newport (S Wales) to Barrow in Furness at 70 all the way and got 61mpg, in sixth.0 -
Good god.
Every mate of mine in the trade, including me and MOT testers are well knowledged on the rear sub frame bushes beaing !!!!!!!
They cost £19 for a set and an hours labour to fit.
Ford did a tddi and a tdci. To be honest, most taxi driverrs prefer the older tddi as it was more reliable than the horrid tdci 115/130...
Make sure the fly wheel has been replaced at soime point in its life - tell tale sign of upcomming failure is the starter motor starts playing up.
Injectors could do with being reprogrammed . Gearboxes can be quite whiney too.
apart from that they're ok. I sell plenty of them!0 -
I own a TDDi and have driven a TDCi. The difference in terms of technology is that one is direct injection whilst the other is common rail injection. The acceleration seemed marginally crisper on the TDCi and the fuel consumption is supposed to be better but I didn't find the difference to be as dramatic as suggested in an earlier post. The TDDi is reportedly less prone to annoying injector and software problems but you do get the occasional slight flat spot. I have been more than pleased with mine with good economy and excellent high speed cruising capabilities on continental jaunts. The subframe problem is already mentioned but you should also look out for rust at the bottom of the doors. There was a manufacturing fault whereby the sealant at the base of the door wasn't properly applied. I had all four doors replaced on my car foc under the corrosion warranty. First Ford dealer I went to had never heard of the problem (it is widely reported, try googling it) and claimed it was due to poorly repaired accident damage!!! (thank you Marshalls of Bury St Edmunds). EMG Ford of the same parish were far more clued up and their authorised repairers told me they had submitted warranty claims for cars as recent as 2004.
If you get one with rear disc brakes, check for sticking calipers and seized cables. Your interior door pulls will almost certainly be losing their coating which makes the interior look a bit scabby but they are a relatively easy diy replacement and I think mine were around £15 per pair from Fords.
Overall a tremendous buy, very comfortable and a pleasure to drive.0 -
i have an 02 tddi ghia with 134,000 when we sell it in the next few weeks it will be at about 2.5k so i think 4.8k seems allot for an 02,
car goes well and has been a good work horse, though can't wait to play with my new 08 2.0 tdci mondeo.

I'm guessing the new shape mondeo will share the same 2.0 td unit as Peugeot and Volvo...
But back to the original question....
The 02 plate youre looking at is dear, as pointed out above.
i'm doing 04 plate Zetec/Ghia hatches for around easry 5''s with 60-70,000 on em...0 -
TDCI = do a search for "dual mass flywheel failure" on google before you buy and check out the results, here is an example:
http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=50897
I have a 2.0 tdci 135hp with 28k on the clock from new i'm the only owner.
Two weeks out of warranty and the dreaded DMF failure struck @ £1300 inc optional new clutch @ Ford main dealer - independant garage will cost about £800 all in.
One month later alternator goes @ £250
These are main dealer parts only (dmf + alternator) so you are fekked if they go on you.
TDi does not have a dual mass flywheel so this risk is eliminated.
Go for an 05 - 06 as these models had less recalls and teething probs as the model was introduced in 04.
Hope this helps0 -

I'll draw your attention to this thread

And especially my post #17 therein.
I don't consider myself to be someone who doesn't like anything (unless it has a Ford badge) but I do think you should be aware of some potential pitfalls.
