  • OK on the Thomas cook website, I selected East Midlands airport, departing 19th July for 14 nights, 1 adult 2 kids. To Gran Canaria, Playa Del Ingles. The first holiday is (for 21st July) £1471, for Half board, it's the 3* Buenaventura Hotel if you went to the 4* Catarina it would be £1735. Easy. I am not necessarily endorsing these holidays but just giving you an idea of what you can get.

If you want to/have to take the dog, and don't have time for a doggy passport, then you are restricted to the UK: I don't think Austria would be any quicker and easier than France. Don't forget to look at the Isle of Wight (Ventnor is stunningly beautiful, with a nice beach and clear water); the Channel Islands; and maybe Northern Ireland (you can't really beat the Giant's Causeway).

If you are free to travel without a dog, then you have loads of options. And I have to say that your budget sounds far more than you are likely to need. Consider renting an apartment somewhere exotic and interesting, and don't forget to check the 'full-service' airlines for bargain flights.

Thanks Voyager2002 for your advice, my apologies for the delay getting back to you :) I'd thought about the Isle of Wight, I used to have great holidays at Sandown when I was a kid !

Well, I've found a lovely cottage in Devon for £800 a week ! Close to the sea and close to a pub... bliss :D There's also room to take my parents as well as my kids and dog :) Everyone's up for it.... except DD  Usual stuff, she wants a pool, entertainment and clear sea water ! Now, I did put my foot down, gently, and said how lucky she was, and in my day.... blah, blah, blah.... but I did feel slightly guilty, had thoughts of it raining for the entire week and so started looking abroad again !

My friends had suggested a resort in Majorca that they'd been to previously and came with top recommendations and I'd felt comfortable to try it out. I had looked previously but the appartments had appeared to have sold out, as indeed my friends had mentioned they could be due to their popularity. Anyways, I checked again last night and sure enough when I selected 1 adult and 2 children there were no appartments but when I selected 2 adults and 1 child there was ?!?! Is this usual ? This trip was about £1800 for the week.

So the latest dilehmia is ( apart from the loo being blocked :D ):

Do I not go ahead with just the week in the cottage ? Bearing in mind that I'd already mentioned it to my parents !

Or, now that I know they're are available options at the resort in Majorca which I'd feel comfortable about trying, do I go for that instead ?

Or, as I've 3 weeks available to take 2 weeks holiday, do I go all out on a UK cottage holiday with my parents for the first week ( they would share the costs ), stay at home for a week, then go to Majorca for a week, thus pleasing everyone ?!?! And not to mention, making the kids realise just how lucky they are !

    SHARM EL SHEIKE

Beautiful water for swimming (some of the best in the world).
Fantastic weather in spring (nicer than summer).
    Great deals to be had.
  • My friends had suggested a Puerto Pollensa in Majorca

Just looked into this further and there seems to be a lot of 'dark patches' in the sea !! Oh Lord, minor point.... but not to my DD !!!! She's not gonna entertain it now !

Thanks MrsE :) My DS has often mention Egypt ( don't ask about DD's opinion ;) )

Maybe somewhere like this, which has fantastic spring weather, would provide a further option of a resort holiday abroad in late May, then the week in Devon in the Summer hols ? The kids are afterall going to Turkey with their Dad for a week in the summer hols already so it would make sense to me to spread the holidays abroad out a bit anyway !

As I've mentioned before, ( and you no doubt realise by now ) I am really !!!! at this ! :D MrsE, if you could point me in any directions for the 'great deals' I'd really appreciate it !

Thank you all as ever :)

How about somewhere in Devon or Cornwall near the beach where you can all learn to surf. We have done this for the last 4 years and our kids are now 19 and 17 and still want to come with us !!!!

Your DD is lucky to be having an "abroad" holiday - my two have only ever been in a caravan in France for a holiday and we have NEVER had a summer holiday because of DH job.
