    Many thanks for the replies guesswho2000, Froggitt, EarthBoy, Biggles and planteria.

    Having checked I found that I had more than £100 in each account, so whilst it seems I can go ahead and close most of the accounts, I am going to investigate to see if I should have qualified for something when Birmingham Midshires was taken over by Halifax. It's worth a look I guess.

    Thanks for the heads up Froggitt. Will let you know if I get anywhere.

    yes Froggitt, Royal Liver is now a sub-fund managed by Royal London.

    might be a good idea to retain membership of the societies. noone really knows.

    Which Building Societies do not have a charitable assignment clause and allow you to start carpetbagging assignment free?

    no point putting Catholic on the list as being part of Chelsea, and even Chelsea is now part of Yorkshire Building Society.

    getting access to Swansea or City of Derry societies, unless you are a local, would be tough..

    and, as discussed above, the whole concept of the 'windfall declaration' is questioned.
