I just halved my insurance cost!!

Hooray!

Just wanted to share that I renewed my insurance with tesco today, and it's gone down from £31 to £14 a month!!

Very pleased, considering i'm a young driver who is considered to be higher risk!!

I quoted a much cheaper quote to them, and they said "we can match that". Easy!!

  • Well done cam101 :T that's a considerable saving!

From my experience, insurers will try to price match - but within reason. A friend of mine recently took upon himself to shave a few pounds off to see if the insurer would price-match. The insurer called him back to say that they couldn't price-match and advised him to go with the insurer who had given him this 'fantastic' price. It sort of backfired on my friend, because the insurer whom he had telephoned to 'try it on' with was an insurer who he had heard was competitive for young drivers. He was then too embarrassed to call them back and ended up paying pounds more than he wanted to pay.

It worked out for you so well done. Hope it's a good policy. I've saved loads by reading up on things on here. :money: Not just on car insurance but on lots of other things as well. Thank you for sharing this with us. Have you got a legal protection included in your policy? You didn't say who you were insured with but I guess that since it's so much cheaper, you don't have one included. I read here on this forum that there's a free legal protection on offer (well it was on offer, don't know if it still is). If you go to www.matthewsguide.co.uk and subscribe they will give you a free legal protection (apparently you can pay £30 for one). I've shared that tip with you - now can you share your tip with me ;) . Can you name the insurer who price matched? No offence if you don't want to but it would be worth me making a note in my 'little black book.'

    Regards

From the OP it says Tesco.
  • Well done you!!!
Though my insurer is putting up my renewal price up by £70 just because I changed my address - they says its because of higher crime rates, and increased risk of theft bla bla bla - But where I have moved to is a little small village, with a very low risk of crime (I looked on internet) - so im an unhappy bunny at present!!!
  • i grew up in a sleepy village full of nice people. all the houses were spread out, and there were woods and everything.

there were at least 2 cars burnt out in that wood every week. not many of the houses in the village had garages, so there was a high risk of cars being stolen (only needs to be a risk, not an actuality).

i then moved to an inner-city area. the central locking on my car (fairly sporty) broke and the car used to 'open' itself in the middle of the night. in 18 months of being unlocked my car was never touched.

the insurers don't care whether it's a village or a tower block - it's the crime statistics for the AREA that matter.;)

I would recomend to be careful, I did this with A&L and they asked e for the renewal quote or threated to increase the premiums
I end up losing money for cancelling, I posted this in this forum too.

Has anyone taken advantage of this offer? If so did they send you a policy and is the cover ok?

    thanks
  • Just got my renewal price from PO for £397 for the year. I went on moneysupermarket.com and got it for £240 plus I qualify for the £50 cash back (which was confirmed to me when i rung them). The best price they could offer me on the phone was £340 so it is definitley worth trying comparison sites

Oops, sorry this reply is so late... I guess I need a new internet provider next!

The quote I told them about was real, from Virgin money. They matched it, including legal protection and replacement car cover.

When the documents arrived, it had a pack for tesco breakdown cover included. I phoned up to query this as I hadn't asked for it- they said it was part of the cheap package... apparently sometimes the only way they can price match is by putting the breakdown cover on and then making your premium ridiculously low.

So I am even more happy now (except the tesco breakdown sticker looks like a tesco bag stuck on my windscreen)

Don't forget that once you have got a price comparison, you may be able to get cashback from Quidco to bring your overall cost down further! Did this with Prudential last year and saved another £100 on top of the lowest premium (not up for renewal for a few months, then time to save money again!).

I do seriously hope that u have got a good deal but from my experience its not about the best quote............but its about the renewable quote which is sent by your current provider which is required as proof. On several occasions I have had to produce it despite various attempts to ignore their request to send the renewable quote. If not they do threaten to cancel the policy or charge you the full amount !!!
