Xbox live subscription can be had for £30 on ebay, I've bought a couple from there.0

CORE / ARCADE
No hard disk. Arcade comes with 256mb memory card
Premium / Pro
As Core, but with 20gb hard disk and headset.
Elite
As pro, but with 120gb hard disk.
Basically the decision is how much hard disk space you want. If you want 120gb, you have to get the elite, otherwise get the pro.
just to add to that the arcade is newer than the core and the pro is newer than the premium. the pro also has a hdmi slot which i dont think the premium has.0 -
i am not so sure that the core/arcade versions would do by themselves for playing online because i am sure i have read that you need to have a hard drive to store your xbox live profile. you may find you fancy downloading game demos etc and you would definitely need a hard drive then. so you really want to get a pro or an elite.0

yep, both the arcade and the pro now have HDMI.
And I'm 99.9% sure you can save your profile onto the memory that comes with the Arcade.
I don't see why they'd sell a console you can't go online with these days, doesn't make sense.0 -
i think because some people may not want to go online. i think you can change your mind later and buy a hard drive for it.0

This is an interesting question - I've never thought too much about it before...but I've just spent 10 minutes googling and for everyone out there that says you need to buy a HDD to go online, there's someone else that says "no, that's rubbish, you can go online with a memory card".
The only clear indicator either way I've found is that the Arcade seems to come with a month's free live gold membership - why would they include this if you couldn't use it?
Anyway...does anyone actually have an Arcade, or *know* whether you can go online just on the 256mb memory card?0 -
Save yourself the £60 for the official Wifi dongle and get this instead, saves you £20.
To be honest, get the pro with the HDD as you will no doubt want to download demo's of upcoming games, XBLA games and maybe HD movies..0 -
All Xbox 360's come with a month's free live.
Any more questions? I'll check this frequently, I've had pretty much every single question at work.0
