Credit Profile

I may have inadvertently smeared my credit profile with a HSBC student account. I went into the approved overdraft several times, and it seems after checking my credit report recently that they have issued these numbers on my file for every month that I did not return the account to credit. There was a 5 month period between SLC credits and so the HSBC listing on my credit profile now shows a red spot with the number 5 in for 5 months arrears. I'm assuming it'll take several years for this to not effect future applications for credit?

    Hi Allan :)

I've moved your query across to the Credit Card board. Hopefully someone will be able to help.

    Good luck :)

If you keep the account going and keep it with a positive balance (even if no transactions on it) then the red spot will disappear eventually.

It's also recommended that you keep any other credit accounts squeaky clean (mobile phone, credit cards etc etc etc) so that this appears as a "one-off" blip.

Think the red blip will stay on it for up to 2 years, but obviously as time goes by it becomes less significant provided you operate your account without going overdrawn.

If you close the account before the red blip is pushed off by other green blips, the red one will show on your account for 6 years from the date of closure.
