£6 Filter Coffee Machines at Asda & Argos

Monday 21 April 2008
What's the deal?
It was the 'must have' luxury item of the 80's but now filter coffee makers have dropped so rapidly in price that if your palette prefers a smoother textured flavour compared to instant coffee, they can now be nabbed for just £6.

But remember to buy filter coffee!

Although it won't be the end of the world if you use instant coffee a couple of times, it does defeat the purpose of owning a machine so remember to buy filtered instead.

The cheapest available
  • £5.97 instore at Asda. The Duraband XQ682 is a pretty basic machine but does the job intended with its anti-drip feature, water level gauge and keep warm function. Up to 12 cups of coffee can be made at once. Stock is widely available across all stores, but if you plan on making a special trip just for it, give your local Asda a quick call to confirm it's still available.
  • £5.99 instore at Argos (or £10.94 delivered online). The Cookworks XQ663 is almost identical to Asda's machine, except it only makes up to 10 cups worth, but of course, that depends on the size of the cup! Plenty of stock is around for this too so, to avoid paying a £4.95 delivery charge, use Argos' reserve for store pick up service to find a convenient branch to pay and collect from.

P.S. Thank you to Martin's Dad for pointing out the Asda offer to him over the weekend!

I got an Asda one several weeks ago. It is basic but works great. It had a washable filter, so no paper filters needed.

I bought an Asda cookworks one last year (which didnt have an anti drip feature, much to my annoyance, had to wait for it all to brew before I could pour a cup).

Anyway, great machines for the price, does the job. The only niggle I found was that it constantly had that new plasticy smell, which tinted the coffee a little sometimes.

The Asda machine sounds like just what I need, but does it keep any coffee not drunk piping hot for later. I ask because many years ago I bought a filter coffee machine - it was quite expensive but hopeless because it only kept leftover coffee lukewarm so I never use it, so I would be greatful for any feedback on the Asda machine. Cheers ktj.

If you like real coffee but a machine is too large/messy then why not grab a french press?

They are about £4 from asda for a single one.
  • sounds like a good deal...

though i presume filter coffee is more expensive than instant?
  • I have one of the ASDA machines in my office - works a treat, the Plastic taste lasted about 2-3 ays but the went. Asda also sell a drum of American filter coffee for £4 great deal.

And it does keep the coffee hot all day.

How many grams in the drum of Americal coffee, please - and is it strong enough to blow your socks off, which is what we prefer! :j

For years now I've used kitchen paper (the cheapest, about a £1 for 4 rolls, without pretty patterns printed on them) to filter my coffee. Just fold twice to create a 'funnel' shape and fold the the 'point' so it sits nicely into the filter-holder. Never had the paper fall apart, and I always compost the 'remains'. (Good for a couple of Cups).

I always buy the cheap versions of these because they 'do the job' and sooner or later the glass jug will break and it's cheaper to buy a new unit than replace the jug. I have the Argos 'Cookworks' model and it's perfectly 'fit for purpose' in the current parlance.
