what to do!

Hi me and my partner keep having the same argument about buying a house he says he never wants to buy a house as your permanantly skint whereas i say were wasting £63 per week rent and the house is not ours!!!
He rekons it costs lots more to buy a house and where i understand you need building and contents insurace i carnt see how much more diff that would make other than an extra 20 quid at most per week so please give me your pros and cons of living in council house and buying own and maybe open my eyes to what im not seeing!!
Im just sick of having to live where the council put us and for once i want to buy a home in a decent area within the town instead of we getting given the rubbish tip with all the druggies and drunks its just not a nice place for dd and ds on way!!!
As i say partner never ever wants to buy as he says he can see all the older men at work all lookking knackerd by the strain of paying for a mortage and they all look old and haggered but no matter what we still gotta pay somewhere to live!
Dont get me wrong i dont want to pay for a 250 grand house etc and we certainly wouldnt get mortage for that price but we could easily get a mortgage for 80-100 thousand and i rekon still live in resonable comfort please open one of our eyes like if you could turn back the clock etc etc many thanks:j

  • A £100,000 repayment mortgage, over 25 years at 5.25%p.a will cost £600/month. This is a 'little' bit more than the £83/week you think it will cost.

  • WOW diddnt no it would be that much mayve i can find a mortgage for around 60-70 grand lol

  • plus you have to pay for everything yourselves - new kitchens and bathrooms aren't cheap, windows, roof, repairs to boilers, plumbers, electricians, carpets..........

you have it very cheap where you are!

Whereabout in the contry are you considering buying a property? There are few places where £60,000 will buy you a property, and even then it would be a 1 bed flat at the best, not suitable for a family.

You have not said anything about your credit rating, or whether you have savings for a deposit and the stamp duty and other fees that are involved in buying a house. The other big difference between owning your own house and renting is that you also have to pay for maintenance and repairs yourself and they can cost £££s. Don't forget that council tax, food and energy prices are on the rise.

You really do need to do a lot of research and above all learn how to play around with one of the many mortgage calculators on the Internet, seeing what a mortgage would cost at various interest rates - especially at higher levels than those on offer today (in case they go up) and see if you could manage them on your income. Otherwise you will risk being one of those who end up losing everything.
  • i doubt very much that you would get a mortgage

    (from another post TODAY)
Dunno where to put this hope its ok here

To give you some idea of what council and HA properties are available to around 780,000 people living in Sussex, the current lists can be found here:

I don't think that she likes living in Durham!
  • There's nothing wrong with wanting your own place that you can spend money on and it not be money down the drain. I am 33 and now only able to afford to buy my first house after renting for years in places I didn't like. You need to make an appointment with a mortgage broker and find out the costs involved in buying a house. Take a notepad and write down all of the fees/costs and get them to find out how much you could borrow.

    Good luck!
