I bought the book and watched the programme. I have decided to buy the mini chopper as I already use food proccessor to chop large bag of onions and freeze into portions also I thought I would boil large pan of potatoes and freeze into rounds for shepherds pies. I hate peeling onions and also potatoes so this will be easier for me when Im in a hurry. I dont mind having jar of roasted peppers in cupboard but I will not be buying jar of minced beef or frozen mashed pototoes although I do like Aunt Bessies roast potatoes and buy them when they are BOGOF, as I said i hate peeling potatoes. Yesterday I boiled carrotts, onion and potato, added a few herbs and we ate a very tasty soup for evening meal. It took me about 30 minutes from start to finish.0

Sorry, probably being thick here, but why do you need a mini-chopper if you already have a food processor???
I don't have the book as I prefer to cook from scratch for money/health reasons.

I remember watching a Blue Peter 'project', it was a small brooch in the shape of a row of coloured pencils - very cute. They said it cost a few pence. HA!
It was necessary to buy four small tins of model paint for a start. But you only used a 'dip' of each - you have the rest for other things! Fact is, if you don't have the paint to start with it is necessary to buy the tins and pay for them before you can make the brooch.
It is a fallacy, if you have to buy something especially for a recipe I think the full cost is the one to take. How many people would use the rest of the pack of tarragon? How many people who don't cook much from scratch will use the rest of the creme fraiche? Maybe they will drink the rest of the vermouth, but if they wouldn't usually buy it they have to part with the money up front.
The fact is, if you wanted to make this pie and had none of the ingredients in the house it would cost £15.27. If you are the sort of cook who would make this dish, it is unlikely - ok not impossible - that you would meal plan to use the rest of the ingredients. We all know how much food lots of people throw away.
I would be fascinated to know how many people actually make some of these dishes. The cheaper ones - like the shepherds pie - yes, but some of these others, I'm not sure many will do it. Time was when if Delia used a certain kitchen utensil, item of food, they would be sold out in hours. I wonder if that will be the same now? We have more chefs now than you can shake a stick at. I also thought the programme was odd, with the football thing going on. Will it catch the public's attention as the previous series have? Not so sure.0 -
I watched this programme and I can see that it would be more expensive to make the meals in the way she did but I don't recall her claiming it would be cheaper
or perhaps I missed that bit?:o
I have to admit I wasn't a huge fan and won't watch again but if it encourages some people to start cooking even in a shortcut fashion initially then fine. I always remember Anthony Worrall-Thompson [not a fan of his I have to add] describing her as "the volvo of cooking" but with this new updated image I can't help wondering what model of car she's morphed into....a boy racer type thing perhaps:D

This programme made me feel ill - all those niftly little packages and products she is promoting for ready-made ingredients. Her kitchen bin probably fills up quicker than most. Think stoozing is clever? That mess above is proof it isn't!0 -
In the past whenever Delia was on TV, I put everything on hold to watch her cook. Not this time, I watched last week to see what was going on and I didn't even bother to look tonight, I think she has just jumped on the band wagon that isn't playing her tune and spoiled her own reputation.0

Last night she was adding pesto to a sauce and said "make sure it's made in Italy... you don't want to be eating pesto that is made in Surbiton".... the look on her face was SOOOO smug.
sorry love but I am in Lincoln and if I made pesto it'd taste a damn sight better than what you've just got out of that jar for a start does she suppose for one minute that factories in Italy are any better than factories over here??... then we had the propaganda about E numbers and the EU... that all they are is additives "salt has an E number....." and she asked were the EU strict etc...
well how about the EU refusing to ban the additives that have been proven to make kids hyperactive? that's how trustworthy the EU are...
Sorry for the rant but she's lost any credibility she ever had with me now she is just Sainsbury's and Marks and Spencer's B**ch. Even Jamie Oliver never milked it this much.0 -
I have to agree. I watched for about 5 minutes before turning over as quickly as i could.
Thats not cooking in my mind either. I prefer to make the sauce etc. Shes certainly lost the plot.
I tried some bread making, delia style, yesterday, as an experiment in taste compared to my panasonic bread maker. It was using the food processor and i ended up using more flour and salt than i would have had in my panasnoic and then watching my bread sink (never ever have i had this before even when i used to hand bake bread ) as soon as i went to cook it. Sure it was editable but it won't be cooked again.
Sunday saw us in search of the ultimate boiled egg. Delia suggested one minute on high simmer followed by removing the pan and placing a lid on for 7 minutes. Result ? Uncooked eggs :(Sorry delia, you may have been good in your day but your patronising ways and smug attitude has got me reaching for another channel ).A male chef of 4. My restaurant is always full and i don't need to tout for business.
OK OK I'm a house husband but it did sound better my way :beer:0 -
I couldn't stand to watch it after last weeks' efforts. Watched "The Passion" instead, much better viewing!I Believe in saving money!!!:T
