Because there are laws governing the driving of a car, laws you agreed to abide by when you applied for your licence.
There's nothing in the Highway code about driving around on bald tyres but I bet you know that's illegal.
I have a ton of additional rules and regulations I have to adhere to as a commercial driver and nobody tells you what they are so you go and learn/find out for yourself.0 -
Hi all, thanks again for your replys. The funny thing, it's a typical neighbourhood, families, old couples, we all have nice little family cars. It's quite a nice area really, just the odd people who crash around at night. I didn't realise there was a fine, so I'll get it sorted out as soon as possible.
I am a bit wary about the online dealers. How do they know you're the right person? I might go and see the dealer who I bought my car off, he might just be able to do me a back number plate?!? I'll ring them tmrw and see. He definately won't be cheap though!
Finc-just looked at that site, seems above board. Might give them a try. Thanks!!!
The online dealers don't follow the law on this but it's unlikely there'd be ramifications from using them.
Just a tip..when you go to get one from a motorist shop/dealer, you'll need to take the V5 vehicle registration document and proof of ID.0 -

i bought private plate(just the actual plates to go on car,not the registration) from a guy on e-bay he didnt ask for proof it was mine, but halfords and such like do
I bet he also said that it was a " show plate " and not suitable for road use, they usually do to clear themselves.
You may find that your car will not pass an MOT with the eBay plates fitted.0 -
I wsould report it,although nothing will be done you will get a crime number, then should you have to use the car in an emergency etc you will have a feasable excuse should you be pulled over,
I would suggest that untill you get your new plate put some sticky tape where the last letter should be and write the letter in black pen at about the normal sizeIMOJACAR

Thanks again everyone.... yes I did spot the 'for showplates may not pass mot' on some of the sites. So, I've booked myself in at my dealers tmrw morning and they will replace it for £13. Bit more than I wanted to pay i.e. shouldn't have been broken off in first place!!! but what can you do!?! At least then it will all be legal and ok and will match the front one. I have got all my documents ready for tmrw.
Thanks again everyone, don't know what I'd do without this site!!!0 -
Well done hun
You a bit calmer today?
£13 isn't too bad and at least you have the knowledge you are road legal.0 -
You could get a car alarm system fitted with a proximity sensor although I have to say I do not think this would stop people messing with the reg plates as a proximity sensor sort of covers a circular area from where it is installed. The sensor is usually hidden near the handbrake or in the roof lining near the centre of the car. It is usually set up so the car alarm "warns away" when someone stands too close, and sets the alarm off when something is detected inside the car.0

You Should Consider Reporting It To The Police.
If You Are Not Already Aware, Thieves Steal Car Reg Plates To Fit To Their Own Cars And Then Drive Away From Petrol Stations Without Paying For Fuel.
The 1st You Hear Of It Is When The Police Contact You Re The Matter.
Now Its Always Poss That It's Someone Up To Mischief, But It You Report The Crime And Get A Crime No' You Will Be Covering Yourself.0 -
You're right to get it sorted pretty quickly. The police are twigging to the fact that its a lot cheaper to show 1/2 a reg plate or even no plate at all, and risk a £30 fine than get scamerad and get a bigger fine and points.
And would you believe it,   , some people actually do this on purpose:rolleyes:  :rolleyes:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0
