Car number plate been snapped off!
Hiya, hope this is in the right place!
DH and I have just taken dog for walk and come back and noticed that our car number plate has been snapped off at the back. We tend to have quite a few people walk past late at night, kids messigng around etc. but we live in a really nice area and this is the 3rd thing that has happened over the last year. You can even see the finger marks (through all the dust!) where they scrabbled to break it off.
Anyway, only the last letter is missing. Does anyone know what we should do? I suppose there is no point reporting it. But I am just so annoyed that we will have to pay for replacements. Is it illegal to have a broken number plate and do you have any idea how much it will cost to buy new ones?
Any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks!!!

You can get theft resistant number plates now.
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/VehicleCrime/DG_10035622
not sure on cost tho of them or normal ones.
You will need to take your V5C Registration Certificate (logbook) plus some ID - photocard driving licence, or paper licence and recent utility bill to get plates made up, or look on direct.gov.uk for full list.

lol good idea pulliptears! I don't know how I'd stop it from happening again. Already had DH van jumped on and fence kicked in. I think it's just one of those things. Particularly annoying when we are money saving like mad and my pregnancy hormones are raging anyway!
Thank you guys for the advice.... is 4plates.co.uk any good? Not dodgey or anything?!? How will I show them id etc? iyswim
Thanks again!!!0 -

Do you actually hold a driving licence?
The legal position is the same as it's been for decades...it's illegal to drive without a numberplate/ broken numberplate like that. Whilst it's not an endorsable offence, it's a £30 FPN which is more than getting it fixed.0 -

Have you considered putting up a CCTV camera to watch over the cars? Or even a sign that says they are being monitored by CCTV? We have had similar troubles with the local high school kids throwing cans at the cars and windows of our house. In the end a community officer went into the school and the problems stopped. May be worth having a word with your community bobby as well?
I know its incredibly irritating, and my normal woman hormones are dictating I want to go out and murder the little sods so I sympathise with what your pregnancy hormones would like to do to them0 -

You can fail an MOT for damaged/missing plates.
If you need them in tact and legible for a legal roadworthiness test, I'd have thought it was fairly obvious that it's a legal requirement.0 -
Hi all, thanks again for your replys. The funny thing, it's a typical neighbourhood, families, old couples, we all have nice little family cars. It's quite a nice area really, just the odd people who crash around at night. I didn't realise there was a fine, so I'll get it sorted out as soon as possible.
I am a bit wary about the online dealers. How do they know you're the right person? I might go and see the dealer who I bought my car off, he might just be able to do me a back number plate?!? I'll ring them tmrw and see. He definately won't be cheap though!
Finc-just looked at that site, seems above board. Might give them a try. Thanks!!!0
