Hi
I've bought a router today and after spending many hours trying to figure out where i'm going wrong, i've come to the conclusion that its not working because my modem cable is a usb connector and the socket it needs to fit into is more like the ethernet type hole, hope i'm making sense so far lol
anyway my question is, do i need to get an adapter/convertor to change my usb plug into the type i need, if so where's the best, cheapest place to get it from. I know ebay would probably be the cheapest but i'm to impatient to wait for delivery. so a store is what i'm after.
thanks for any help

Hi
The phone socket jack is called an "RJ11" if it was a network cable jack it would be called a "RJ45". Most computer shops should have what you need, should cost no more than about £3.00.0 -
Hi and thanks Steve,
just had a search and found the RJ45 Coupler, but what i need is one that converts my usb cable into a network/ethernet type connector, hope i'm making sense ? i'm a bit of a technophobe lolNobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

Have you got Phone or Cable Broadband?
What model of router have you bought?
I might be able to help, not promising tonight as I am on my third glass of wine:beer:0 -

LOL, think i'll join you, its a ruddy nightmare this networking lark, up and running in 3 minutes  yea right, i'm on phone bb with plusnet, the router is a belkin F5D5231-4, hubbys picked it up today, but i've realised that its not a combined router with modem and looking at the instructions it appears i need a modem with ethernet port and mines usb :wall:Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

There are only a couple of routers that have USB ports, Draytek and D-Link I can name off the top of my head.
As far as I am aware (unless nearlyrich proves me wrong:o ) there isn't an adapter available that can do what you are asking.
Most people abandon the USB modem (save it as backup) and go for a combined modem/router. Price wise there doesn't tend to be much in it.
Can you not return the router and get a combined one instead?
Was typing when you postedThis site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

We had exactly this problem when we set up the wireless network here, we bought a router and then we had to add a broadband modem. I can't offer an adaptor solution but your comments set the alarms ringing and I thought that it sounded like our experience. Are you going wireless too?
This might help0 -

no its wired, but i never realised that they'd all have different connections, i guess a different router is my only option :cool:Nobody can make you feel inferior, without your permission

Have you got a network port on the PC ? If so try plugging the router into the PC network port and the modem in to the USB at the same time.
I'm not saying it will definately work and the PC it's plugged into will have to be switched on to access the broadband connection but it might get you working for now ( everything crossed) I am not really a techie ( I have done a couple of courses for networking but it's a while ago and things change every week in IT) Hope it does work X0 -
