  • Hi Loopymadlover, I get my seeds from alan romans http://www.alanromans.com/ as they are cheap and the ones I have had are very good 50p a pack etc... Wilkos is good for bargain basics like watering cans. One tip though, get there early as I reckon lots of people will be doing this, seed sales were up last year and with the crunch, more people are growing their own. Don't want to start a rush but it is sensible to be prepared, once you get going you could save your seeds from plants too. Good luck :)

    Hello and welcome! :D

If you really want to save money on seeds then collect then from the foods you eat and store them until the beginning of next year. We have successfully grown veg from seeds taken from tomatoes, squash, peppers and chillis. Just collect and clean them and store them in envelopes. Cuttings from fruit bushes are also great, if you know anyone that has them growing in their garden.

  • I was given a heated propagator for my birthday this month and was wondering if it is too early to start off some of my seeds like Aubergine, Chilli's and Peppers? They didn't do too well last year and I thought they may do better with a bit of a headstart. Any advice gratefully received.

I'm going to start off my chillis and peppers next week, so not too early at all.
Turn off the heat as soon as they come up.

    Not sure about aubergine's

  • My OH has sown a few tomato seeds this last week to see how they go on. He too wanted to give them a head start on last year. He's sown them in pots, covered them in clingfilm and has them in the greenhouse. He's only sown about 12 seeds in total (2 varieties), as a kind of experiment. I'd be tempted to give your heated propogator a go with a few seeds and see what happens. If they fail then you still have plenty of time to try again and if it works you could end up with a staggered crop and more chilli's. We read loads of gardening books etc yet still find its mosly trial and error (and a lot of fun :D).

I normally do the beginning of Feb so yeah. Globe artichokes and cardoons can be sown Jan too.

as long as you have space to keep them warm until planting out in late April onwards then you can start things off under heat. But watch they don't get too leggy. Things sown later (March) will catch up so you can leave it yet - there is plenty of time. Sow leeks, onions and buzy lizzies now though.
