Shaftesbury are based in Burgess Hill, West Sussex, so they might cover quite a big area in the South, in case someone is interested....

Hi Penelope! What are Victorian shutters like? And would you pass on the details of the joiner who renewed your windows, if he works in London? We need to repair some original sash ones. Thanks!

We have shutters in our old house (rented) and they are fantastic for keeping the room warm on a winter's evening. Have been known to leave them closed all day when its really cold.
  • Shutters are available from Hillary Blinds (www.hillarys.co.uk), in a number of styles. They also have a freephone ni. 0800 916 6524.

Isn't that called serendipity Haribo??? How on earth did you find the right thing, the right quantity and the right measure!!! Congratulations! That does not happen to me even when I'm buying full price!
    .

Yes it was lucky. Especially as the windows aren't standard size but the 2 in the middle needed about an inch shaved off each one.

My MIL has the original victorian shutters Penny and they're amazing. SHe restored themherself by hand.

I checked the Hillary brands site and phoned them (they do not publish prices in their site), then worked out the price measuring my windows.... they only do wood, and their cheapest model works out more than 50% more expensive than the quote they gave me for wood.

We have original Victorian shutters in our house. They were boarded up and inaccessible due to PVC windows when we moved in, so when we replaced the wooden sash windows, we took them out, restored them, and had a joiner remake the weights.

They're great for keeping the heat in during winter, heat out during summer, and as an extra security measure when we're away.

Don't suppose anyone will want to see photos, though............

    Haribo, yours are beautiful!

Stop teasing and start posting:p ..............I've already thanked you:D

For some reason I couldn't get your link to work but managed to google it.

I too would love shutters, our house was built around 1903 with very large bay. Most bay windows shown have wide corner bits in brick (they are like 3 separate windows), ours do not, they are 3 separate windows of course but do not have room to attach shutters to the middle corners.
Do yours have wide corner bits in brick? If not is it possible to post a photo, sorry if I sound cheeky :o but I would love to see what they would look like and how they have been done iyswim
these new plantation shutters are really becoming popular. If you drive around some streets in london and clapham and battersea and chelsea, you see shutters on just about every house that you pass!

I am in Windsor and contacted http://www.thecaliforniacompany.co.uk who were recommended on here for buying shutters. I have to say they were excellent and I almost bought from them but my windows are bay windows and are a bit trickier for installing shutters. Therefore they advised I should use a different company http://www.shutterlyfabulous.com who come and measure the windows for you.

I felt more comfortable with this and their design guy was brilliant. I did get other quotes but shutterly fabulous were the best priced and professional.

Don't know if they cover shutters in Birmingham but worth a try?

My mum and dad got inside shutters for some of their windows, they look amazing but I think they were very expensive.
