Funnily enough I'm in a similar situation although the amounts are nowhere near as high. It's a week since I placed a bet and it's actually been a good week even though I'm currently in debt because of all my wreckless gambling. My card is maxed out at 1k at the moment because of it all and my current account is at zero unfortunately. I've kept decent records of my spending these last few months and I've calculated that I've spent €12,600 on betting and taken in €6,500 in 8 months, leaving a net loss of roughly €6,000. Scary when I type this stuff all out.

But yeah, it's been a damn good week without betting! I've actually picked up a book again and started to read it!

Hi Dark Defender and a warm welcome to the Forum - which we've just established is addictive, but in a great way.

Congratulations to you too for a whole week gambling free! Yes, it'll take a while to sort your money out, but just like Tom, you're well on the way to doing so, especially by enjoying reading. So very well done Dark Defender, be proud!

Thank you. It looks much more hopeful for broke student now. He seems to be sorting himself out.

It does indeed tesuhoha. It's a real joy to see people getting to grips with their problems, mostly by themselves too. You gave some great advice at the beginning though, so good to read.

  • Addiction to anything is so lonely, so a big well done to for speaking out.

Your studys are really important though, the coun dept at the uni should be able to really help with extentions on your work, also your personal tutor may be a good place to call in.

Try to be strong you can get through this and you will come out a better person. Just get all the support you can. Loads of hugs

That was such a joy to read boredofbeingathome, I'm really thrilled you've brought it here (so to speak) for Tom and others with any such addictions to spur them on. Amazing how far he could travel in that time.

Good luck Tom and The Dark Defender, all being well that will be you 2 also in time to come, with patience and determination!

  • Just a quick line (sorry hadn't seen this thread before) to ask whether you've spoken to your tutor yet? You need to be careful if you've been skipping classes to cover your back in case the uni decides to take drastic actions - not all will but best to be sure.

Also to ask whether your student union has a student financial advisor or similar? They might be able to help you to negotiate better deals on your debts if you're paying interest  especially if you tell them you're awaiting help from the counselling service (you don't need to go into details as to why if you don't want).

I also see you've got another PT job. Just to say be sure not to do so much work that you don't get your degree at the end. It might be an obvious point but if you come out of this without a degree then it will all have been a waste of time...

    And lots of luck.
  • Hi everyone,

Its been a while since I've been on here, just had a lot of things going on at the moment. Things have taken a turn for the worse recently, I have been faced with a large electricity bill and a doubly-overestimated gas bill which have put my account over the limit, meaning (what little) money I had I now can't withdraw. At the same time, I used my cheque card to pay for my shopping, but rather stupidly using the wrong chequebook by mistake which has netted me an additional £80+ in bank charges, money I cannot afford to pay at the moment. I am also due for the rent, water, telephone and the tv license - and my month's wages have not been credited (it's a new job) and I still have not received my student support. I hate the way that I can do so much extra work to try and pay everything and then see it all swallowed up in bank charges, which by themselves are relatively small but banks do like to charge us for every transaction you have made in reverse price order to get as much money out of us as possible (once ran up over £300 in charges for going overdrawn for less than £20). I have missed payments on my cards just trying to get through, and it looks like I am not going to get any money until next month now. I cant even get a tenner out of the cashpoint and I don't even have the loose change to get into uni. To make things worse, I have had a bit of a relapse last week and put £20 through a fruit machine. I know it is 'only' £20 but that £20 is a lot of money to me right now. I have had such a s*** time recently, and I wish I never had done it, just put the last month to waste (and they still remember my name in the arcade).

Oh well, at least things will be better next month - I think I will be paid somewhere in the region of £5,000 for all the backdated wages and student support!
