    Hi Broke student.

Listen to what everyone on here is saying to you. You know you need help and not gambling for 10 days is excellent, it shows you can be strong and can get out of this.

Look on this as the start of your new life. But ( i know there is always a but!!)

Would you tell your parents of any good news? would you tell your parents (god forbid) if you were diagnosed with some serious illness? I'm guessing the answer is yes to both of those so why not tell them about this. Make it clear you are not asking them to pay your debts but you need them and thats what they would expect you to do. Of course they will be upset, angry there may even be tears etc but believe me you will feel better after telling them. As a parent i would be mortified if i thought my kids couldn't come to me for help, support and advice. Think back a few years to when you fell over cut your knee who did you go to for a cuddle? It's no different now. Please don't do the macho thing and keep quiet.

It may help to write them a letter and set out clearly what the problems are and give to them to read while you go and put the kettle on.

We are all supporting you mate but you need people close to you to do the hugging and crying with you. It's not easy i know ( been there done that) but do it and do it soon.

Sorry for the moan. I agree totally with getting help from gamblers anonymous. The other thing you need to do is open another account ( make sure its a basic one with no credit facilities) get your salary and student loan paid into there and start living. Talk to CCCS or Payplan to get help and advice on sorting the debts out, but if your wages are being eaten up in od charges etc that isn't helping.

    Dave

Well done on taking your first steps in conquering the addiction.

I agree with DaveK1 ... you really need to tell your parents what is going on but do emphasise that you do not want them to pay this for you ... tell them you got yourself into this debt and you will get yourself out of it but you just need their support not their money.

I am a parent of a 20 year old and a 22 year old and there is nothing they could do that would stop me from loving them or supporting them. In this situation well yes I might have a few words to say but I would help them to work out how to pay it back and get back on track, not necessarily pay it off for them.

You are addicted to gambling, you need help and you need the support of your parents and other family members. I hope that you can get the help you need.

  • Good luck trying to sort your situation out - you've admitted you have a problem and that's the biggest step over with. Now, it's just the hard work. Think of it as making the decision to run a marathon - you've made the decision to do it, now you need to do the training and live like someone who wants to reach the finish line. You can do a little bit each day to solve this situation and get yourself out of this.

Football cliche coming up - one day at a time though!
Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!
  • Can only echo the sentiments above really, you've owned up to your addiction which is the biggest step and congrats for not placing a bet for 10 days. You need to tell your parents about this, but perhaps wait until you have spoken to gamcare and clearly worked out how much you owe and where you will go from here. That will show them that you realise you have a problem and have started taking steps to rectify it. Good luck, I know how lonely university can be when things aren't going well :)
    This is getting addictive! :D:eek:
