Again it was with Abbey, do you think there is a flaw in the security?

I just got a letter from Abbey Business saying they are upgrading their internet security. Thus IMO I think there is / has been a flaw in their security previously.

Is it me or I am right in saying that the Abbey seems to have more problems than any other bank in the UK.

I'd suggest that people could switch to a bank using the new card readers so that even if their account is broken into - the frauster can't transfer money out. But of course, based on the threads we see here, "no one needs those", "they are just a pain", "they don't stop anything" and "I'd never let my login details get out". Obviously the fraudsters have other methods and this extra layer of security does help.

The bank is unlikely to be the weak link in the chain - the fraudsters target the easiest place and then break in from there. Webmail accounts are regularly targetted - they'll login - see who you shop with and use and then try the same password on those sites.

If the bank is the weak link - they'll have people shoring up the problem.
  • This Abbey theme of online banking fraud still is happening. I had £3500 taken just after Xmas. I logged into Internet banking and then within several hours my PC crashed completely, 3 days later I logged on to Internet banking and found the money had been taken the same time as the crash. The woman at Abbey took the details as though it was just one of many. I had all of the virus checker, threat scanner, firewall etc. Seems if they want to get you then they will.
  • This has also happened to me. At the beginning of the year I logged onto internet banking. A few hours later my PC crashed completely and would not re-boot. Logged onto internet banking today and found out that £11,000 has been taken from our account. Logged on to pay our VAT bill and the money is now not available.

Interested to know if this has happened to anybody else ? Did you get the money back ? How long did it take ?

    Thanks,

    Marv.
  • We have several Abbey accounts, most with £0 credit, the main 2 with a few £'s. We keep them in case we need them in the future....it being so difficult these days to set up an account. My question is..if the fraudsters in this thread try to take money from the accounts, will Abbey pay it? Of course if the fraudster is internal to the system, he/she will know there are no funds there!
  • My savings and current accounts were emptied of £26000 on 31st December. The fraudsters set up three large standing orders in my savings account then transferred it to my current account. From there it was transferred to a 3rd party Abbey account. Obviously their software is not as defensive as it should be. I first spotted that the money had been stolen when I went to a bank machine on 3rd January. I phoned Abbey - they immediately cancelled my card. After this I tried to log on to my Abbey account but it didn't recognise my password. I then had to phone Abbey again and they changed the details so that I would be able to log on once they had sent me a letter with the information. I phoned Abbey Fraud Dept who said their investigation would take 4-6 weeks but they reassured me I would get my money back at the end of the investigation. By the time I got into my account several of my direct debits had been paid out which meant I was well overdrawn so Abbey slapped on charges of £243.82. I contacted the Fraud Dept last Friday and their investigation is still ongoing and they couldn't tell me how long it would take as there were so many people involved. I notice that they have made changes to their site - hopefully this won't happen to anyone else.
  • Iv had several thousand transferred to a Natwest bank account this week from my Abbey Online Account. It does point toward someone working for abbey, or their systems are not secure. I have never had any problems with the other banks which I have been using since 2000. I suggest anyone else using abbey online banking to really consider cancelling online banking or moving their accounts as whoever is responsible for this will empty your account out.

I have been told the investigation can take upto 6 weeks, so I am left high and dry. Can anyone else who has had the same problem please advise how long it takes for you to get your money back, as I am really going to struggle now without it.
  • Hi

I had a similar problem at the Abbey. Once I learned the investigation was going to take some time I approached them and asked for £2000 overdraft which they applied to my from the next day. Perhaps you could use this method to tide you over.

    Good luck!
  • Me too - I got best part of £2,000 lifted from my account - again going to a Bank of Scotland account. The spooky thing was that the amount stolen was almost to the £ the amount of my approved overdraft, and I think this points towards the Abbey having a problem. Just a small point too - when raising this the banks tend to think it is their money that has been lost. It's not - the money is yours - they said they would look after it for you - they failed - so they should pay it back right away. And they are not falling over themselves to report this to the police - so maybe the customer should take the bull by the horns?

They don't think it's their money, that's why they are in no hurry to recover it for you.

That is why I say always use your credit card where ever you can - that IS their money ! Any fraud is their problem, not yours.
