A 1km is very good. Mine is a 5km line and with o2 ADSL2+ I get over 3.5Mbps - and my line was regarded as 'the limit' for 0.256Mbps service back in 2001 when I first got it for £75 installed and £40/m. ie now I get 14 times better for 70% less

See if your exchange is "o2 enabled" and sign up to o2 broadband on their £12.50/m package (reduced to £7.50/m if you have an o2 monthly mobile). You'll get the best ADSL your line CAN provide as it's ADSL2+ with no caps and no throttling and no extra fees. Sign up via quidco and get £25 back (ie at least £20 net) so £10.50/m for first year. Min 1yr contract and 100 days to leave and get money back if you don't like it. I've been with them c110 days and very pleased.
eg tests to www.speedtest.net
my modem synchronises to the o2 at exchange at 3670 kbps and all the last week's tests have given throughput for download as over 3000, ie 80% of synch speed = almost at technical limit = ie no congestion/throttling/etc.0
