Windows XP/2000, anyone?

Hi everyone,

Can someone please tell me where to get a cheap Windows XP or Windows 2000. I would be really grateful as I just bought a printer that I cannot use because it uses those versions.

Many thanks

So what do you have at the moment? Vista? 98? And which printer is it, are you sure there are no compatible drivers? Seems incredibly drastic to buy/change your entire OS just for the sake of one peripheral. Unless you're upgrading from 98/ME of course.

  • Or maybe you could get the relevant driver(s) from the printer manufacturer's website for the OS in use?
That would be the easiest/cheapest option surely, if available?

Exactly. My Epson CX5400 was discontinued at least 2-3 years ago yet Epson have Vista drivers on their website.

That's why I'm wondering if they mean they want to upgrade from 98/ME etc if they only bought the printer recently. If it's Vista there's no reason I can think of why it wouldn't work if it's a recent printer. Even the ones that manufacturers no longer support seem to have native drivers built into the OS to support them.

  • scraper, you're on the money. I am in fact using the lovely ME which is one of the few windows versions that this printer driver won't work with. The printer I just bought is an hp deskjet F4100 series. And despite just buying it yesterday brand new, HP have discontinued tech support for it. So yeah, pretty much screwed unless I upgrade or anyone has any ideas that can work.

    thanks in advance

According to HP it only works with 2000, XP and Vista.

You could try to 2K driver that might work

Have a look on eBay for some legal and genuine sealed versions of 2000 or XP (Pro preferably).
I don't think a W2K drive will work under ME, as W2K drivers are meant to interact with NT, and ME isn't built on that.

I'd move away from ME asap, it's one of the worst products MS have produced.

  • Okay thanks, I ll try and check out ebay. I hope they do cheaper than amazon.

When I say cheap, I mean if a new laptop costs 300 (which is true), spending 150 quid on getting windows which comes standard on a laptop is silly. So I am looking at below 50 really......
