T-Mobile PAYG sims not working

I recently bought a Nokia 6020 on T-Mobile at my local Tesco for £24.99 and I tried the T-Mobile sim in the phone but all that shows on screen is an horizontal arrow pointing up in the top left hand corner and there is no signal. (Virgin works well here)
I tried phoning the mobile number for that sim and got the message you have dialled an incorrect number. I threw the sim away thinking it was unusable and got the phone unlocked and put in my o2 sim and all was well.
I have just received 2 free T-Mobile sims and was intending to use one for the web n walk but both sims are the same as the other one I had and not working. New Virgin, O2, Tesco and Vodafone sims work fine when put in but not T-Mobile. There is nothing mentioned in the booklet that came with them except to put some credit onto it but I don't ant to put money onto a defunct sim.
I have put the sim into a Nokia 1101 and it says Sim registration failed.
Any ideas?

Have you registered the sims with T-Mobile? They might not work until you register them, just an idea

Just phoned T-Mobile customer services on a landline and the reason the sim is not workng is that it has to have credit put on before it is activated and will show a signal etc. so now you know.0
